Final goodbyes - OGL
I figure we could use a nice little going away thread, to make our final
posts here on this site we've given so much time, money and energy to. It
just seemed right.
I actually found this site while looking for a football GM fantasy site. I
just made a quick single season team without much a thought and let it run
on. I got hooked pretty quickly on running my team and all the minutiae.
I soon discovered all the fun was over in the off-topic boards. This is
where I really made a commitment to the site, because this was the only
board where interesting and stupidly funny was happening. Every other board
was just too dull, it was the off-topic shenanigans that really kept me
going.
After all the leagues I've been in, the Warren Spahn being the first, on
to the Ron Santo that I ran for a spell and the ill-fated Urban Shocker
league, none mattered as much to me as the Oscar Gamble league. This is
where we planted our flag and where we had the best mix of owners. Just
look at the activity scores for all the private leagues, no league comes
anywhere near as busy as ours. It's a shame it had to end, but the game
became boring and conversation was all we had left. Great conversation, but
still, the business of this site wants discussion limited to just the game.
Silly, considering all the ads the boards have now, you'd think our
activity would count for more. Oh well.
So long, Sim Dynasty, it's been a good run. We'll always have the
memes.
The exodus begins.
Music! For you!

I think I've said this here before, but I found the site within the first
few weeks of actually having internet at home, on one of those awful AOL
discs, when I was just searching for fantasy baseball. I did the whole
single season thing for a really long time, and I only found the board on
accident. I started making horrible posts in off topic in 2003, I think,
and continued with that and single season teams for a couple years. The
AKL/EBL/whatever was my first pay league (STAND UP BART), and I eventually
captained that ship as it ran into the iceberg of widespread apathy. Which
was fun.
Anyway. At some point in there the insanely silly off topic era began,
which was when I started to become better acquainted with a lot of you
people. Then the RSL, and the OGL, and all that jazz. It's been...real,
or something, I don't know.
Music Thing!

I've never actually been in the OGL but have enjoyed the discussions
(although at times I haven't kept up.) Sometimes snarky, usually funny,

Krautmatt found this site, I dont know how. We made some single season
leagues, and we got especially hooked because of the renaming.
We went into off topic, where Skier and I had some disasterously stupid
conversations, and he was my rival, and rivals keep you coming back. Of
course, soon after HollywoodOz became my rival because he is actually pure
evil.
I, in true off topic fashion, got banned well before the OGL even existed
for making off topic posts, and was banned for nearly 3 years. But yet I
tried to come back here, nearly every year. 3rd time is a charm I suppose.
I had to eat some serious shit, but it was worth it.
This thing was all grown up when I got here, took a bit to get used to it,
but it was really a nice thing you had going. Its a shame it appears it
will die, but i guess this is what happens when we dont take a stand, it
never gets resolved, and by the time we do take a stand, it may be too far
gone.

after shep died, the whole thing was kind of a pitiful shell really.
(back when i first started was when happy was kind of in his first heyday,
and it was something to see. never did one kid torture a group of people
like tom could in those days, and i would like to really commend him on it.
nobody can say, young tom is not unique.)
for the history, the GNL was my first pay league, after fooling around with
single season for quite a while. aaron found me in the wsl, and brought me
into the usl wthout a vote. later, he brought me into the OGL without a
vote. there i was reunited with daniel and kurt, who i knew from the YBL.
and i found a host of characters i had previously just sort of brushed up
against (and got quite wet) in places like off topic and sports talk.
in the OGL, folks like Craig and Tyles, kann and kurt and daniel and drew
and facematt and jon benne and onur (some of whom i first knew from the
USL), and later deveau and 13 and others, and happy and erik especially,
made playing the game and following the forum one of the most enjoyable
features of most every day. it is somehow fitting that sports talk ended
us, we probably had the most fun over there.
i thank everyone who participated and hope to see you around the forums at
simdynasty or anywhere else on the interwebs. or tom there right here in
good old Alexandria.

Here, I'll do one of these for serious, for nostalgia and shit.
I remember which player it was at baseballreference - Eddie Matthews. Who
knows why. My first post was about a pitcher in a single-season league who
hit for the cycle. I joined the Billy Hamilton League (Dynasty), where
Meathead's team won a bunch of titles before I got out after my obligatory
6 season run. Then the ill-fated Bob Uecker League, which had a ridiculous
"1 out of 12 chance" lottery for each team that didn't make the
postseason. Became a denizen of OT in this time-frame, when we used to
talk about sports and make fun of skierdude. I'm 90% certain that the
seed for the OGL was planted in a post by Lou, although I know other people
had done theme teams in various leagues (I remember KrautMatt and Tommy
talking about this at one point, before the OGL was even an idea.)
Somebody could probably dig up Lou's post in OT if they were so inclined.
I was definitely in on the ground floor with the idea, and then made my
first theme because I had just watched 24 Hour Party People. Joined the
USL because it was a thing to do, and I had another theme I wanted to try
out. Met all you people. Made fun of a lot of assholes. There's
probably more but I am too stupid now to remember and also banned.

Tom - I gotta say you taking up for the little guy somewhat flies in the
face of what I feel is your normal POV - the "the rich are rich and let
them do what they want to / can afford".
What if Tyson just thinks that these guys aren't worth the trouble anymore
(see bolded)? What does the OGL / off topic posting really do for Tyson?
You know there are many of owners who would never even bother with the non
league boards, some don't even know they are there or care.
As for sticking up for those guys - yes they are my friends, but this is
the internet, and it's not serious business to me (and I wouldn't think
anyone on here, except for Tyson). I'm not going to get my panties in a
wad because my friends just got kicked out of a bar that they have been
loitering around in for years (in some cases, only really interested when
there is controversy ((sorry Aaron)) ordering nothing but waters and the
occasional beer, all the while mocking the game, the new forums,
whatever.
Does it really have to be that serious? It's the internet. There is
already a new forum up. The OGL has been dead for many renewals now.
It's time.

I have to say I'm sad to see the OGL go. It was fun to check in every now
and then to see what crazy crap you guys had come up with next. But its
demise was more or less inevitable. It's fitting that it's going out in
something of a blaze of glory, as much as can be expected considering the
medium.
I joined the USL almost exactly 4 years ago, during the last World Cup. At
the time I had to compete with mr1313 for a spot in the league. It was a
lot of fun hanging out with you guys all these years, and I will check in
on the new board every now and then. If any of the usual suspects are ever
in Chicago, definitely look me up. It was cool hanging out with Tyler.
Really more like old friends getting together for a couple brews at the bar
than any kind of awkward internet meetup.
I figured I would eventually join back up, or more likely join the OGL
football league when the time came. But it seems it's not to be.
