RIP Vin Scully

Post by Easytarget12 »

I'm a bit young (and a bit east coast) to truly have experienced his Golden Age, but, our league's namesake has died and it feels like the occasion ought to be marked.

I'll spare everyone a long eulogy but if you like good writing and/or Vin Scully, I recommend this piece by Dan Le Batard: https://danlebatard.substack.com/p/shot ... dium=email

I grew up with Vin, first listening to him in 1970. On Sunday mornings when the Dodgers were playing on the east coast, my dad would let me miss church so we could watch the game on TV together. I was fortunate to listen to some of his greatest calls as they happened: Aaron's 715th, Mookie Wilson's between Buckner's legs, Dwight Clark's catch, his final sign-off, Joe Cater's Series winner for Toronto, and, of course, Gibson's blast against the A's.

His story telling skills are a model for other broadcasters to emulate.

As an Australian his intro to the opening series in Sydney in 2014 always makes me chuckle as he tries an Australian accent with a 'G'day mate'.
