Top Prospects of the CPBL 2020

Post by TheBigKahuna0 »

Little late this year, but don't worry. I still have time to judge all of your decisions regarding your minor leagues. So here it is! And now I get to cheat slightly be peeking at the 2020 improvements. Enjoy

19 Rank - 20 Rank - Name/Team/Pos
3 - 1 - Gene Basinski TOR SP - Drafted 6th in 2016 - ETA: 2021
There's going to be a riot if Basinski isn't promoted soon. A pretty tepid and polite riot, but still classified as a riot. Actually, forget the riot, this is Toronto, not Vancouver. This guy is ready.
Future Comparison: Jim Duncan

5 - 2 - Don Westlake NYA CF - Drafted 3rd in 2016 - ETA: 2021
Westlake is nearing A- overall and could be promoted soon after. His bat is ready, although another year in the minors could make it great for his debut.
Future Comparison: Kevin Hecker

8 - 3 - Gino Laredo SFO SP - Drafted 11th in 2016 - ETA: 2021
Laredo is knocking on the door of A- overall and a promotion. With nothing to play for, the Criminals are keeping him down for one more year. He'll be a staff leader before long.
Future Comparison: Bobby Flacco

7 - 4 - Pat Cato CHN 2B - Drafted 2nd in 2015 - ETA: 2021
If the league was all left handers, Cato could be the MVP. However, his B+/B+ swing vs right handers keeps him in the minors. That's the one hole in his game that hopefully another year in the minors can patch up.
Future Comparison: Lee Sheldon

13 - 5 - Nap Kappers CHN LF - Drafted 9th in 2016 - ETA: 2021
Kappers is just about there. He could hang against right handers but needs more time to hone his approach vs left handers. His glove should be good enough if not solid. Look for him to make his way to the big team by next year.
Future Comparison: Woo Woo Davis

12 - 6 - Ty Hurd CIN RP - Drafted 1st in 2018 - ETA: 2022
Already a solid B-/A, Hurd can make A- overall before his first legal drink. Too bad the Red Legs won't be able to use his A+ speed as a pinch runner when he's not on the mound.
Future Comparison: Frank Allietta

19 - 7 - Slim Oliver CHN 3B - Drafted 12th in 2017 - ETA: 2022
Olivers has done well to round out his attributes, although at the expense of hitting vs right handers. His power is coming along well and he could even manage shortstop in time. He could be an exciting name to watch after another good year.
Future Comparison: Nick Zuvella

NR - 8 - Jamey Sheets COL 2B - Drafted 4th in 2020 - ETA: 2022
Sheets was the second Highlander to get picked in the first 4 picks. In Sheets, Colorado gets a nearly ready bat that will make great contact and should swat plenty of home runs. He's a mess defensively that will have to keep hitting to stay in the lineup.
Future Comparison: Ben Textor

NR - 9 - Buck Blackaby WAS SP - Drafted 11th in 2019 - ETA: 2023
BB is a good pitcher with a solid fut- HOLY LOOK AT THOSE IC'S! He converted over 50% last season and could be a solid prospect with a fantastic development curve. Unless things really crash, he's going to be a star.
Future Comparison: Dwight Krsnich

NR - 10 - Justin Fallbrook CIN 1B - Drafted 9th in 2017 - ETA: 2022
Fallbrook is a piece picked up a couple of years ago and looks like a good addition. He'll be a well-rounded hitter and cover every inch of first base. However, runners will be able to go from first to third on a grounder to first base with his D+ arm. Small price to pay for a middle of the order masher.
Future Comparison: Ralph Lopata

31 - 11 - Hernando Pedre BOS CF - Drafted 9th in 2018 - ETA: 2023
The power, speed, and range are all legit. Pedre is looking like a centerpiece prospect in Boston that Terrier fans will be calling for soon.
Future Comparison: Rupert Sierra

26 - 12 - Steve Ricketts TOR SP - Drafted 5th in 2017 - ETA: 2023
Ricketts is coming off his best year so far and is looking like a promising pitcher. At B/B he has a couple more years to develop but should be a very good mid-rotation starter.
Future Comparison: Nick Henderson

32 - 13 - Bernie Montague NYN RF - Drafted 26th in 2018 - ETA: 2023
Montague continues to improve nicely and is starting to look like a more impressive prospect. He should be able to max out contact and speed in time. The Gothams are planning on using him in the outfield, which is the best plan but still won't work out well with his glove.
Future Comparison: Eric Unitas

27 - 14 - Bill Siegle CHA CF - Drafted 17th in 2017 - ETA: 2022
Siegle's bat is coming along very nicely and he'll make red ratings in every offensive category. His defense remains a glaring issue and he has corner outfield written all over him.
Future Comparison: Ray Vinson

NR - 15 - Grover Gonzales BRO SP - Drafted 7th in 2020 - ETA: 2021
Gonzales is a near ready prospect with some control issues. He could be contributing to the Ballbusters as soon as this season and can be a decent starter in the long run.
Future Comparison: Ben Piccolo

18 - 16 - Matumba Jackson BRO SP - Drafted 2nd in 2017 - ETA: 2022
Let's get back to the panic. Jackson had a slow 2017, followed by a good 2018, and then another bad year in 2019. He can still be good, but he has to get things together in the minors.
Future Comparison: Candy Ardoin

17 - 17 - Kevin O'Day BAL RP - Drafted 47th in 2017 - ETA: 2022
The third rounder hasn't been able to repeat this lucky first season in the minors, but he's still inching closer to the major leagues. However, Baltimore is going to be too good when he needs meaningful innings and he might need to seek his shot elsewhere.
Future Comparison: Joe Tanner

20 - 18 - Hugh Madden KC SS - Drafted 4th in 2018 - ETA: 2022
Madden is coming along but wasn't great last year. That will bring his ceiling down to an uncomfortable level. He doesn't have to duck to get in his kitchen, but he doesn't have the room to play hopscotch.
Future Comparison: Matias Robinson

NR - 19 - Spud Reed CIN RP - Drafted 17th in 2018 - ETA: 2022
Reed is a control heavy reliever with a shot at meaningful action. He has a great 2019 to credit for his bright future. If he gets lucky in the endurance department, he could start some games.
Future Comparison: Hank LaRose

37 - 20 - Frank Chiamparino NYN 1B - Drafted 13th in 2019 - ETA: 2024
Chiamparino makes great contact and will run well in his career. He should cross into B- territory prior to turning 20 years old, keeping him in the long term plans of the Gothams
Future Comparison: Pete Mills

29 - 21 - Izzy Alexander BOS RP - Drafted 9th in 2019 - ETA: 2024
Izzy is traveling down a well-worn path of high velocity and middling control. He's solid for his age but scouts will keep an eye on his command. Fun fact about the Terriers, each of their players are the 9th pick in the past 3 drafts.
Future Comparison: Joe Oliva

NR - 22 - Fabian Morgan BAL RP - Drafted 18th in 2019 - ETA: 2022
High on velocity, low on endurance, Morgan is the type of reliever that comes out and will throw as hard as he can for 10-15 pitches before needing to come out. His control is coming along nicely making him a pretty good prospect for a 2nd round selection.
Future Comparison: Luke Delsing

NR - 23 - Ed Seyfried DET C - Drafted 16th in 2019 - ETA: 2021
Seyfried joined the club via the draft last season as a high powered catcher with contact and speed concerns. He is a strange case in that he has good range and arm potential, although his arm is lacking for catching. He could end up a shortstop, although he'll be stretched there in the beginning of his career.
Future Comparison: Jed Blank

34 - 24 - Johnny Ford COL RF - Drafted 8th in 2018 - ETA: 2023
The power is still there, although Ford blew a few too many IC's on speed last season. His bottom line looks like a slow learner, but he already has good speed keeping him from converting. His swing against left handers is still a concern.
Future Comparison: John Dorsey

33 - 25 - Glenn Gregory PIT 2B - Drafted 11th in 2018 - ETA: 2023
Gregory is a little on the slow side for a prospect his age, but he's also closing in on a catcher conversion. He might not have the arm to stick there, but he'll at least be able to add that value.
Future Comparison: Bill Patten

41 - 26 - Joe Mancini BAL 1B - Drafted 7th in 2018 - ETA: 2024
Mancini's swing against right handers is still his meal ticket. He's not much against lefties, so he's still a wait and see type prospect. The good news is he shook his poor first year and developed well last season. We'll know this year which of those development seasons will be his trend.
Future Comparison: Johnnie Sharp

45 - 27 - Milt Foreman WAS RF - Drafted 19th in 2019 - ETA: 2024
Foreman had a great first year and broke through to B- at just 18 years old. He'll be terrorizing AL pitching in just a few short years.
Future Comparison: Matt Wilson

NR - 28 - Ronny Castino COL SS - Drafted 2nd in 2020 - ETA: 2026
Another Castino in Colorado? This is getting ridiculous. This one is good, just like the rest. He'll need to bring his approach against left handers along, but that shouldn't be a problem for a 17 year old.
Future Comparison: Nick Zuvella

NR - 29 - Felipe Camacho SFO 2B - Drafted 5th in 2019 - ETA: 2024
Camacho is a big power prospect that should also steal plenty of bases. Defensively, he looks like a good first basemen, although the Crims are going to give him a look elsewhere.
Future Comparison: Charlie Porter

NR - 30 - Ben Gandil PIT 3B - Drafted 12th in 2020 - ETA: 2024
Gandil is a high power prospect that should also run well. He's horrible in the field and is going to spend plenty of time with the trainer. The bat potential is worth a shot at 12th overall, but he's far from a perfect prospect
Future Comparison: Frank Panther

44 - 31 - Joe Dumoulin DET SP - Drafted 32nd in 2019 - ETA: 2023
Worth the dart throw at the end of the 2nd round last year, Dumoulin proved with 17 major league innings that he doesn't have the right stuff. He'll hold his 16.94 ERA until he can get another shot.
Future Comparison: Mike Connally

NR - 32 - Danny Sage KC SP - Drafted 4th in 2019 - ETA: 2024
KC's top pick from a year ago looks like the real deal. He had a solid first year where he got 85 IC's and converted well. He has top of the rotation potential.
Future Comparison: Ray Otis

NR - 33 - Jake Holloway BRO SP - Drafted 18th in 2017 - ETA: 2024
He hit his max in velocity now the Ballbusters have to hold their breath. Holloway could end up a decent piece, but he's not a lock to make C+ control.
Future Comparison: Babe Possehl

NR - 34 - Greg Deidel TOR RF - Drafted 1st in 2020 - ETA: 2025
Hello Mr. Lottery. Deidel is a very young prospect (this column was 5 years old when he was born) with great contact and speed potential. He'll max those out easy with solid power. He won't be lights out defensively, but he'll hit so much nobody is going to care.
Future Comparison: Jay Toporcer

NR - 35 - Lefty Blankenship STL SP - Drafted 51st in 2018 - ETA: 2022
Before last season Blankenship had about the same odds of making the big leagues as actually throwing left handed. 16 conversions in 2019 put him back in the conversation. If they Browns rebuild in the next couple of years, this could be one guy that benefits greatly.
Future Comparison: Bobby Maharg

NR - 36 - David Mendoza SFO CF - Drafted 8th in 2020 - ETA: 2024
Mendoza has great contact potential and should hit some home runs against left handers. He's one of the younger prospects in this past draft, leaving plenty of variation in his development.
Future Comparison: Joe Miller

NR - 37 - Charlie Pennyfeather KC SP - Drafted 29th in 2020 - ETA: 2022
Pennyfeather (yes, from that Pennyfeather family, the one with the ostrich fortune) doesn't look like much but was worth a shot in the 2nd round. This is his one year to impress management and if he does he could end up a back end starter. More likely, he breaks through as a middle reliever down the road.
Future Comparison: Dennis Hamilton

NR - 38 - Babe Chamberlain DET SS - Drafted 30th in 2018 - ETA: 2024
Chamberlain has potential against left handers but that's about it. Platoon partner is his ceiling.
Future Comparison: Nippy Norton

NR - 39 - Bernie Kuhn CHA 3B - Drafted 27th in 2018 - ETA: 2022
Kuhn doesn't look like a long-term starter with his current ratings. He's still a project and a bit too old for that kind of endeavor. He's a good bet to make a bench and even start in his prime, but he won't bring home any awards.
Future Comparison: Babe Naehring

NR - 40 - Johnny Suder WAS RF - Drafted 11th in 2020 - ETA: 2025
Suder is a young contact prospect with a good future. He'll have great speed but lacks a position. He'll hit very well against right handers but could struggle long-term facing left handers.
Future Comparison: Eddie Brown

NR - 41 - Jim Krieg BOS RF - Drafted 9th in 2020 - ETA: 2025
Go ahead and give the kid a gold glove because he's going to win a lot of them. He'd be a lock for a stolen base crown, too, if his bat showed more potential. Right now he should be good against right handers but starting D+/D against lefties could be why he slipped this far in the draft. He turned 18 just before the season so there's plenty of time to figure out the batter's box. Fun fact about the Terriers, each of their players are the 9th pick in the past 3 drafts, with Krieg being the most recent.
Future Comparison: Juan Lescaille

NR - 42 - John Berman NYN RP - Drafted 26th in 2020 - ETA: 2025
Berman is a lottery ticket in New York. He has enough time to improve on his D+ control, but the odds are not in his favor.
Future Comparison: Tom Shears

NR - 43 - Razor Dickman NYA CF - Drafted 22nd in 2019 - ETA: 2025
Let this be the petition to change the Bombers' nickname to the New York Auto Promoted. Razor Dickman (really Abe? That name?) never really had a shot with his splits, but he'll be able to take his 3 major league home runs with him. He'll never develop enough contact to stick.
Future Comparison: Shigeo Komatsu

NR - 44 - Luke Smith NYA RP - Drafted 7th in 2013 - ETA: 2022
Smith is about to turn 27 and has had some tough years in the minors. He needed an early promotion to have a shot and that time has passed.
Future Comparison: Chet Clemens

NR - 45 - Stewie Regalado CHA RP - Drafted 49th in 2017 - ETA: 2023
He's maxed on velocity but still converting some control. That will come to and end in time and the 21 year old is a longshot to reach C+ control. He's kept his same balance since being drafted in the 4th round thus proving his draft stock true.
Future Comparison: Willie Cunningham

NR - 46 - Bob Cook STL CF - Drafted 47th in 2019 - ETA: 2024
Cooks has the power, but can't get his bat on the ball. He'll wash out before long.
Future Comparison: Clyde Ellis

43 - 47 - Charlie Munoz PIT RP - Drafted 26th in 2019 - ETA: 2024
Bust alert. Munoz converted 1 IC of 62 last year. This will be the last time he shows up on this list.
Future Comparison: George Dempsey

NR - 48 - Mike Freitas STL 2B - Drafted 40th in 2011 - ETA: 2021
Freitas isn't too bad, but he's 29 and not getting better. He's the 3rd ranked prospect in the system (with 11 CP's) so maybe the St. Louis system could use some attention.
Future Comparison: Mike Freitas

lol razor dickman!

imo that sexy freak Pat Cato is #1. he will win batting titles and gold gloves. (assuming gold gloves aren't heavily influenced by health like all stars are, i have no idea).

Always an awesome job! Discouraging for NL also rans that the Curse has been able to build such a strong system. Guess I'm going to go find a Billy goat.

We have some nice hitting prospects...young pitchers coming up and being relevant? Not so much.

Didn’t think the team would tank this quickly, few retirements to some good players but should be playing better than our record indicates. I’m not ready for a full rebuild yet, it was supposed to be gradual.
