San Francisco at Atlanta Series

Atlanto took two of three from first place San Francisco in Atlanta winning games one and two by identical 5-3 scores and dropping the third game 2-1 as the Shamrock salvaged the final game.

Atlanta delat Ron Massey his third defeat in his last four decision in game one. Massey went six innings allowing ten hits and four runs walked one struck out five.

EricMayo (8-5) was the winning pitcher and Marv Fewster picked up save number 9.

Atlanta tied the game 1-1 in the 3rd inning on a single by Gil Sambito off Massey then took a 3-1 lead in the 4th on a single by Pete Pape and a sacrifice fly by Lou Grammas.

San Francisco trimmed the lead to one run in the 5th on two extra base hits, a triple by Orlando Dilauro and a double by Ike Dark.

Pape's double and a single by Ted Hallahan off Karry Cairo in the 6th made it 5-3.

Marv Fewster picked up save number 9


In game two Gordon Stouch hit a three run homerun off San Francisco starter Bill Conzelman in the first inning to propel the Hammers to a 3-0 lead.

Atlanta went up 4-0 in the second on a walk to John Davis, a bunt by Atlanta starting pitcher Ryan Flinn and a run scoring single by Tim Hallahan.

Atwo base throwing error by Flinn allowed Chuck Parker to score San Francisco's first run in the 4th inning.

4-1 Atlanta.

San Francisco scored a second run in the top of the 6th on a two out double by Ike Dark and a RBI singel by shortstop Mike Gonzalez.

4-2 Atlanta.

Atlanta went up 5-2 in the 7th when rookie Johnny Smith walked Phil McGravner and allowed a two out double to Masao Sharein.

San Francisco closed it to 5-3 on a RBI single by Gonzalez in the 8th but got no closer as Keith Raines nailed it down for his 6th save.


San Francisco 2 Atlanta 1 (10 Innings)

San Francisco is now 8-1 in extra innings..Atlanta is 4-5.

Larry Cairo 3-0 got the win.

Starting pitchers Earl Hassler and Steve Fischer both pitched well but neither figured into the decision.

Hassler went seven innings gave up two hits and one run walked two struck out two.

Fischer went seven and one third innings gave up six hits and one run walked one and had seven strikeouts.

Cairo came in in the eighth and worked two innings for the win.

Dick Myers closed out the game in the 10th for his 3rd save.

Jay Cowan singled (the second hit off Hassler), stole second, advanced to third on an infield out by Jim Brown and scored on another by pitcher Steve Fischer.

San Francisco tied it in the 8th inning on a one out RBI double by Mark Gonzalez off Fewster who saved game one.

San Francisco won it in the tenth. Julio Gorsica doubled and Mark Gonzalez doubled in the go-ahead run.

Myers did his thing after that.


The New York Giants swept the Pittsburgh Pirates to chipped two games off the Shamrocks first place lead.

The Giants won 5-3, 3-1 amnd 1-0 the only run scoring in the 10th inning of game three on a homerun by Bill Trujillo.

Montreal, Brooklyn, Pittsburgh, Miami and Chicago are all now officially eliminated from post season play.
