Frank Chance League

Post by basilrathbonejr »

Brooklyn (27-7) has been humming along on all cylinders and has built a sizeable six game lead over Pittsburgh and eight games over Atlanta, but the Miami BeachCombers have new ownership who are invested in winning and have told the club that they are evaluating the team for next season and a winning season is the goal.

At the moment Miami is tied with San Francisco in fourth place. Both have 17-17 records. The Giants are 4-6 in their last ten and the BeachCombers are 5-5.,

Miami came up with a big win over first place Brooklyn in game one of a three game series at Ocean Front Stadium. The DodgerBlues are 13-2 at home and 14-5 on the road, 0-1 now in Miami.

Miami took this one 4-3. Don Harkness, the third pitcher used by Miami, was the winning pitcher.

Neil Brenner, a right hander started for the Miami, and went seven innings. Brenner gave up three of the six hits he allowed in the first inning with one out, singles to Brian Ruess, Freddy Lee and a RBI single to Gus Edmonston. Brennen issued both of his two walks allowed back to back to Rudy Rose, and Dwayne Huber, to force in a then second run. Brennen struck out the next two batters, Rich kuzava and George Reitz to end the inning.

YoYo Roberts tripled and Ricky Hamner hit his 6th homerun to tie the game 2-2.

Brooklyn went in front 3-2 in the fourth inning. Rick Kuzava hit his 7th of the season and the 7th allowed by Brenner in 50.1 innings pitched.

Danny Mitterwald tripled and scored on a ground out to third base by catcher Barney Swann.

After Brenner departed Fred Mancuso pitched a scoreless 8th inning recording one strikeout and Don Harkness had a scoreless top of the 9th walking one and struck out one setting the stage for a walk off 9th inning win.

Trey Pertica took the mound for Brooklyn. Pertica walked Paul Deihl with one out. Chuck Koskie singled to right field sending Diehl to third base. George Lipscomb was walked to load the bases to face Danny Mitterwald, who had a triple earlier, doubled in the winning run.

NOTE; Miami ownership announced that the team's goal for the rest of the season was to play well and finish with a winning record. The obvious needs for the team are depth at starting pitcher and at shortstop where the team is extremely weak.
