Miami 4 Atlanta 3 in 10 innings

Miami improved to 5-3 in extra innings with a 4-3 comeback win over Atlanta at Ocean Front Stadium in game one of a three game series.

Miami and Pittsburgh, who also won picked up a game on first place Brooklyn who lost 6-4 to Chicago. Kevin Baldwin had a three run homerun for Chicago. Herb Seminick (4-2) picked up the win going eight inning. Rube Peques garnered his seventh save.

Stan Dietrich, rebounding from a slump, hit his 11th homerun in the first inning, off Eddie Bailey. The long blast to left field tied Dietrich with Rudy Rose of Brooklyn for the National League lead. The homer was the 6th surrendered by Bailey in 60.1 innings pitched.

Damon Hudson cut the lead in half in the second inning with a solo homer off Figueroa. The 6th homerun hit this season for Hudson, the 4th allowed by Figueroa.

2-1 Miami.

Bailey left after six innings (6IO 5H 2R/2ER 2BB/2SO). Darnel Crowley took over.

Atlanta began to solve Figueroa in the seventh inning. Singles by Doc Ferens and Tommy Lee and a runs scoring double by Richard Brown tied the score 2-2.

Atlanta took a 3-2 lead in the eighth inning off Figueroa. Bob Lee had a one out single and Jack Veryzer singled with two outs sending Lee to third base. Figueroa was replaced by Don Harkness. Figueroa's line; 7.2IP 12H 3R/3ER 0BB/4SO.

Harkness gave up the go-ahead run charged to Figueroa on a two out double by Ferens that drove in Bob Lee.

3-2 Atlanta.

8th The BeachCombers tied the game in he bottom of the eighth inning when Paul Diehl tripled and Dietrich doubled.

Jorge Simmons replaced Crowley (1.2IP 2H 1/1 0/1).

Miami took charge of the game in the 11th. George Lipscomp singled, stole second and then stole third off losing pitcher Dick Irabu. Paul Diehl singled drove in the winning run..
