First a little update on the recent history of the league. The 1950 season featured a good pennant race, at least down the stretch, where eventual champion Brooklyn blew a big lead to Pittsburgh and Miami in September, but held on to take first place and Pittsburgh finished second. Pittsburgh had Brooklyn on the ropes in the NLCS three games to two but just could not finish them off losing the final two games of the series. Brooklyn won the first two games of the World Series, then dropped four straight to Minnesota.
This season neither of the World Series participants have started off very well. Minnesota, the World Series Champion, is last in the American League with a dismal 10-34 record, twelve games behind Baltimore. Brooklyn is nine games behind Miami having won just four of its last ten games.
Miami was 44-37 (.543) five games behind Brooklyn last season but has started very well this season (25-9 (.735) four games in front of Pittsburgh. The BeachCombers came from behind to win their eighth straight game 7-5 over the Atlanta 7-5, scoring four runs in the eight inning to tie the game and two in the ninth to pull out the win.
In the second inning Miami loaded the bases on a single by Niles Hensley and two walks to Danny Mitterwald and Jeff Matarazzo loaded the bases with two outs but Hartzell lined out to the pitcher, Briley, to end the inning.
After Miami starter pitcher Ray Hartzell had retired the first six batters in order, he walked the lead off batter, Harvey Guinn, in the third inning, and that started a big inning for Atlanta. Guinn stole second base (1st), where he easily scored on Tom Smalley's double. Atlanta pitcher Eddie Bailey's bunt moved Smalley to third base. Leo Darnell drove in the Brewer's second run with a single to centerfield. Hartzell got the second out by striking out Damon Hudson. Scott Hearn and Jay Shotton both singled to load the bases but Mickey Rollings struck out to end the inning. 2-0 Atlanta.
Miami trimmed one run off that lead in the bottom of the third inning. Yo-Yo Roberts reached on a two-base throwing error by shortstop Damon Hudson then stole third base. George Lipscomb's deep flyball to centerfield scored Roberts. 2-1 Atlanta.
After leaving the bases loaded in the two run third inning, Atlanta left the bases loaded again in the fourth. Hartzell with less than his best stuff still, had to work very hard to limit the damage done. Ace Davey led off the inning with a double to leftfield. Dave moved to thirdbase on Guinn's groundout to Scarritt at first. Hartzell got a big strikeout of Tom Smalley for the second out but unexplainably walked the pitcher Eddie Bailey who was trying to bunt. Leo Darnell singled in his second run of the game to make the score 3-1. Hartzell did not pay any attention to Bailey at second so the pitcher with only C+ speed stole third (1st). Hudson walked to load the bases. Hearn left them loaded with a ground out to shortstop Neil Roberts. 3-1 Atlanta.
Miami went down in order in the fifth and Atlanta was back at Hartzell in the fifth and for the third straight inning again left the bases loaded! Shotton flied out to Lipscomb in leftfield for the first out. Hartzell struck out Rollins for out number two. Davey and Guinn followed singles and Smalley drew a walk to load the bases, but again the Brewers failed to deliver the knock out punch has pitcher Eddie Bailey struck out. Still just 3-1 Atlanta.
Bailey got Miami out in order again in the bottom of the 5th. Bailey had retired seven in a row at this point allowing no runs on one hit and two walks with three strikeouts.
Hartzell departed in the 6th with two outs. Darnell and Hudson both flied out. Scott Hearns singled for Atlanta's ninth hit off Hartzell. Fred Mancuso replaced him. Mancuso was making his 30th appearance and the most recent of them had swelled his ERA over 8, so he was looking to turn things around. Jay Shotton the first batter he faced singled to right. The second batter Mickey Rollings flied out to Yo-Yo Roberts in right field. And Atlanta still led by just two runs...3-1.
Miami threatened in the 6th, but left two on; Hamner who walked and Starritt who singled with two outs.
Mancuso had a good inning in the 7th walking the first batter, Davey, but got Guinn to hit a one hopper to second baseman Ricky Hamner for 4-6-3 double play. Mancuso finished by striking out Smalley to end the inning to keep the score 3-1.
Atlanta finally added on to its lead in the 8th inning off right hander Phil Salveson making his 34th appearance with a 3.38 ERA. Bailey popped out to shortstop Steve Kashiwada just in at shortstop after Stan Dietrich unsuessfully pinch hit for Neil Roberts in the bottom of the seventh inning. Leo Darnell (3rd hit of game), Damon hudsn and Jay Shotton all singled in sucession for a run and Mickey Rolling ground out to Hamner got in the second run to make it 5-1.
Don Harkness replaced Salveson. Harkness striuck out Ace Dailey to end the inning.
Suddenly Miami came alive in the final two innings after a frustrating performance for the first seven innings. Geoirge Lipscomb singled to centerfield and stole second base (12th). Hamner popped up to Guinn at second. Bucky Scarritt, getting a chance to play with Paul Diehl on the shelf, tripled driving in Hamner (5-2).
That was all for Eddie Bailey (7.2IP 4H 3R.2ER 4BB/S0) who left with a lead.
Crowley did not retire a batter.
Niles Hensley doubled to right field scoring Starritt to make it 5-3.
Dave Lind, pinch hitting for CF Danny Mitterwald, singled past shortstop Damon Hudson scoring Hensley to make it 5-4.
Dave Collins pinch hit for Steve Kasiwada. With Collins batting, Lind stole second base (6th). Collins tripled scoring Lind to tie the game 5-5.
Dick Irabu replaced Crowley and with the go-ahead run on third base struck out catcher Jeff Mararazzo and pitcher Don Harkness field out to centerfielder Leo Darnell.
Harkness held Atlanta to a one out single by Tm Smalley in the top of the ninth to set the stage to get a walk off win.
Jorge Simmons came in for Atlanta, normally a closer with nine saves, Simmons wanted to send it into extra innings.
Yo-Yo Roberts singed to start the inning and stole his second base of the game, his 12th on the season. With Roberts at second, Ricky Hamner, a left handed hitter, hit one of Simmons' fastball to deep right field for a game winning two-run homerun.
Final 7-5 Miami
The win for Harkness (1-0) is the third straight win for the Miami bullpen.
