Frank Chance League

Post by larrysiegfried20 »

The top two National League teams, the Chicago Colts and the Miami BeachCombers, began a series in Miami, at Ocean Front Stadium. Both teams came into this series hot, each having won eight of their last ten games.

Miami came into this game on a homerun binge, having slugged six in the last three games. Paul Diehl hit three of those homeruns, and he put Miami in front with his fourth in four games, eighth of the season, this one coming off the former All Star Hank Seminick (2nd allowed in 33.1 innings pitched) with two outs in the inning.

It was Diehl's 34th career homerun putting him third among active players in homeruns.

Miami exploded for four runs on just two hits in the bottom of the third inning. Herb Seminick struck out pitcher Ray Hartzell to start the inning, then gave up a one out single to Yo-Yo Roberts before walking Hensley and Diehl to load the bases. Roberts scored a ground out to third baseman Matt Kemp by Miami catcher Stan Dietrich. George Lipscomb followed with a two run single scoring Hensley and Diehl, Ricky Hamner reached on a two base throwing error on Seminick. Lipscomb scored an unearned run on the play.

Miami led 5-0 at this point.

Hartzell retired the first ten batters he faced striking out four of them.

The two walks given up by Seminick came back to haunt hoim as did the wo Hartzell issued in the fouth and fifth innings. Both of thise batters scored. Hartzell walked Stove-pipe Shover with one out in the 4th. Nelson Potter singled to left field. Shover went to third base on the hit and scored Chicago's first run on a sacrifice fly by Buster Besse.

The same scenario occured in the fifth inning. Hartzell walked Kemp with one out. Kemp advanced on a ground out to Diehl at first by Robert Miles and Seminick drove him in with a ringing double of the left field fence.

5-2 Miami.

Chicago mounted a threat in the seventh. Singles by Joe Walcott and Matt Kemp had runnewrson the corners with one out but Robert Miles grounded into a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning.

Niles Hensley robbed Glenn Skogland of an extra base hit with one out in the seventh to foil hopes of a rally in that inning.

Phil Salverson picked up his first save this season in the ninth inning for Miami. Salverson allowed a two out single to Jersey Joe Walcott, then struck out Cleary to end the game.
