The Chicago Colts and the Miami BeachCombers have been in a rampant pennant race in the National League since opening day. Chicago currently holds a one game lead over Miami, a mark that has stood since the very outset. Third place Pittsburgh has dropped back a couple of games over the last ten after going 6-4 and trail by six games.

Chicago 2 Brooklyn 0

Chicago's Jim McDonald (4-3) shutout Brooklyn 2-0 on just two hits over seven innings. McDonald walked three and struck out seven.

Rivers Pilot struck out three and gave up one hit over the final two innings for his third save.

Kevin Pointer (3-1) took the loss. Pointer surrendered a two run homerun to Glenn Skogland with one out in the seventh inning for the only scoring in the game.

Miami 5 Atlanta 2

Miami knocked off Atlanta 5-2 for its fifth straight voctory to kept pace with Chicago.

Atlanta scored a run off Miami starting pitcher Teddy Figueroa om the top of the first inning. Two walks to Damon Hudson and Scott Hearn, sandwiched around a single by Jay Shotton, game loaded the bases with no oluts. Figueroa settled down to get Jack Veryzer to ground out to shortstop Jose Latz. Hudson scored on the play but that was all of the socring in the inning. Figueroa retired the next batter, Bob Lee, on a comebacker to the mound for the second out, and Doc Ferens popped out to second baseman Ricky Hamner to end the inning. Atlanta stranded two runners.

Tom Yde allowed two runs in the bottom of the first inning that put Miami in front 2-1.

Hamner doubled to left field and Niles Hensley singled in the tying run Paul Diehl drove in his 25th run (3rd in the league) with single to give Miami a 2-1 lead.

Diel figured in the next Miami scoring rally in the 3rd inning as well. After reaching on a fielder's choice, Diehl stole second base (5th) and scored on a run scoring single to center field by George Lipscomb.

Mitterwalkd flied out for the second out. Stan Lipscomb singled to center field but Lipscomb was thrown out at the plate by center fielder Doc Ferens.

Atlanta pulled back one run in the 4th inning. Walks again hurt Figueroa. The right hander walked Bob Lee, who stole second (5th) and scored on a two out single to left field by Richard Brown. Leo Darnell grounded into a 4-6-3 ining ending double play. 3-2 Miami.

George Lipscomb reached on a one out single in the 5th inning. Lipscomb advanced on a wild pitch by Yde. Danny Mitterwald drove in the final run for the BeachCombers ith a single to right field.

Don Harkness picked up his league best 17th save with a scoreless ninth inning.
