Charley Finley NL Baseball

Post by jacktoast »

Atlanta with a 38-18 record leads the National League standings by a comfortable 7 games over Brooklyn who have lost two straight to the St Louis Browns and 8 games over defending National League Champion Chicago Cubs who have won eight straight games beginning on August 26.

On that date the Cubs began a sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates, in Pittsburgh, (4-3,11-5 and 11-9) in a progressively higher scoring series. The Cubbies then took down Los Angeles back in the Windy City, in a progressively better pitched series, 11-1, 3-1 and 5-2. The Cubs have taken the first two games of their current series at home with the Arizona Mudsharks, 2-1 and 7-1.

The long suffering St. Louis Browns have seemingly found a winning formula after making ten trades, an many more roster moves to generate something positive for the franchise.

There are nine players on the current 40 man roster who came as a result of one of these trades; starting pitcher Mark Prior has been 6-7 in two seasons with the Browns, is 5-5 with a 4.39 ERA this season. After suffering from a drought of runs previously Prior got 14 in his last start for a 14-4 pasting of the Giants. The jury is still out on relief pitchers Al Gilbert and Hal Gregg who have pitched better recently.

Catcher Tom Stelmaszek, acquired from Los Angeles, is hitting .222 but .255 4 21, with the Browns, has been out hit by the Browns other catcher Scott Tate (.302 1 12).

Jo Jo Crandall was disgarded by Arizona and acquired in a trade that sent pitchers Al Beard, and Les house and second baseman John Strobel to Arizona. not only for his bat but his defensive ability. But due t the emergence of second baseman Todd Crumbling (.340 0 Hrs. 11 RBI 15 SB) batting in the lead off position, Crandall has been used as a super utility player appearing in 15 games at second, 7 at shortstop, 5 at third base and 3 times as a pinch hitter. Crandall is hitting .277 with 4 Hrs. and 15 RBI in 30 games.

Centerfielder Ossie Ramos (,248 1 Hr. 12 RBI 10 SB and providing a level of defense in centerfield unseen prior to his arrival. Vteran right fielders Mike Bosio (.295 0 5) and Joe Householder (.238 with a bullet, 0 4) have proven whichever of their bats that is in the lineup lengthens the lineup.

The final player on the list is Bill James a second baseman traded away after being called and recalled, included in several trades that were turned down and fianlly trade then put on waivers was resigned by the Browns after clearing waivers. Here's hoping James gets a September call up for some meaningful playing time in a meaningful game.

St Louis 7 Brooklyn 4

St. louis won it's fifth straight game taking Brooklyn 7-5 banging out 13 hits to scpore 7 runs.

Tink Santangelo picked up his second win during the winning streak going 7.1 innings 8 hits 4 runs 4 earned run 2 walks 5 strikeouts. Santangelo is 5-1.

A four run first inning off Ron Glenn (LP 3-7) blew the game open early. Todd Crumbling (.340 walked, stole second and scored on a single by ossie Ramos. Woody Splittorff singled to right field Ramos to 3B. David Meister, starting at first base now, singled past shortstop Footer Hand. Ramos scopred. Jo Jo Crandall hit a two run homer (4th) off Glen (7th allowed) to put the Brwons in front 4-0.

A 3rd inning double by Meister and a run scoring single by Tony Tarasco added to that lead. 5-0.After Brooklyn scored single runs in the 5th, 6th and 7th, the Browns scored two to answer in the bottom of the 7th to go ahead 7-3.

There were three defvensive changes in the top of the 7th; Les Nietro (1B), John Smith (SS), and Mike Bosio in right field. Nietro and Smith figure in the scoring rally. Ramos singled and stole second, Nietro doubled with one out driving in Ramos and Smith singled home Nietro for 7-3 lead that Jake SDtephens protected for his 14th save of the season and third in the last five games.

Good old Bill James. Offered in more one-sided deals than any player in sports history. Nice to hear from him again.

UPDATE: The Brooklyn Raiders have defeated St.Louis 7-6. The Raiders took a 7-2 lead heading to the bottom of the 7th but then had to hold off a determined comeback attempt by the Brownies. Interestingly, ex-Raider Mike Bosio came to bat in the 7th representing the tying run. Sadly for Mike, he never had an opportunity to swing the bat as, first, one teammate was picked off 3rd by the wily Andres Pagan and, second, another was gunned-down trying to steal 2nd by the mighty arm of Jim Anderson. Always nice to see Mike and his teammate Doc Christensen, another Raider alum.

But Mike felt better once he realized that his team had taken two of three from his former club.

You can't win 'em all....

historymann, are you staying around for the new set after this season?

Hope so...

One sided deals???? We have made ten trades in two season!!!

LOL

I live near Fort Hood...We went to see the 4th of July fireworks display and we got home late....

I don't think I'm staying around. It's nearly impossible to develop players in 3 half-seasons. You either get a good initial draft or you don't, so what's the point. And I remember some of those Bill James offers.
