Cleveland 4 Kansas City 0

Latham shuts out OF-Fountains

The game meant nothing to Kansas City, who have done all they need to do in the regular season and the Cleveland Barons are in the midst of finishing up a dismal season that might have gone better with a little better organization of the talents on hand. But that is ater under the bridge, the team wants to end the season on a high note and get after it next season expecting to do better.

Hank Latham was another who had something to prove in this game. He was DSA'd earlier, then pulled back. He started and had one of his and the team's best pitching efforts of the season. Latham went the distance allowing just five hits and no runs gave up three walks and struck out three which probably gave him a chance at returning next season.

Latham gave up just two hits after the fifth inning, a one out double in the seventh to John Mogridge and a two out single to Larry McCabe.

Latham needed some good defense to save him earlier in the game. In the first inning Latham walked the lead off batter Chuck Mays Second baseman Enos Callahan fielded a ground ball hit by Woody Brooks and started a 4-6-3 double play. Latham was not out of it yet as he walked the next batter, Kevin Bailey before striking out Tim Lee.

Mike Kenna walked Socks Foster and Bert Sterling singled to right field. Frank Ortiz struck out. Enos Callahan, who had a great game both offensively and defensive, hit a three run homerun, his 3rd of the season and the 10th hit off Kenna in 95 innings pitched. 3-0 Cleveland.

In the bottom of the second Cleveland flashed some leather again to hold off the hard hitting OF-Fs once again. Stan Guth singled to left field. Tony Lonnett hit a laser to the right of Callahan, who somehow dove, fielded it and got up to start Cleveland's second double play of the game. Kansas City was frustrated when the next batter, Larry McCabe drilled a triple into the right field corner but was left on when John Mogridge flied out routinely to left fielder Socks Foster.

Mike Kenna struck out the side in the bottom of the second, getting third baseman Mark Stricker, shortstop Mike Bucha and the pitcher on ten pitches, the first two swinging, and Latham took three strikes.

First baseman Joe Nitcholas stole a hit from pitcher Mike Kenna to start business in the bottom of the third, then made a routine play on a grounder by Chuck Mays. Latham issued his third and final walk in the game to Woody Brooks, then got Bailey to pop out to left fielder Socks Foster.

Cleveland Bert Sterling reached on an error by shortstop Stan Guth with one out in the bottom of the thrid inning. Sterling went to third base on a single by Frank Ortiz and scored on Callahan's sacrifice fly ball to right field giving Callahan four runs batted in in the game.

After Mogridge doubled with one out in the fifth and was left on Kansas City never seriously threatened again as the Barons won by a score of 4-0.
