Pittsburgh 7 Montreal 1

Pittsburgh broke into the win column in game one of their series with Montreal to keep pace with Houston. The Pirates broke out of a team wide hitting slump to pound out eleven hits and take six walks from Montreal starting pitcher Owen Black (6IP 7H 5R/4ER 6BB/10SO LP 2-5).

Frank Scherrer (2-1) pitched a copmplete game giving up just five hits and one run one walk and six strikeouts.

Right hander Glenn Emslie has been big pickup for Houston, going 4-0 with a 1.82 ERA since being acquired from Philadelphia. In his most recent effort he went 8.2 innings gave up 9 hits and three runs walked one and struck out five.

His mound opponent was Don Nichols, the pitcher he was traded for. Nichols did not have his best day lasting just 2.1 innings in his fourth start for the Phillies. Nichols was pulled after giving up six runs on seven hits. one of the biggest frustrations for him in the game is that almost all of the damage was done to him after there were two outs.

For example, with two outs in the 1st inning, Joe Haw doubled.Rick Carey the next batter singled putting Houston in front 1-0. Tom Spooner lined a single to left field and Wally Johnson doubled in Carey and Spooner to put the Rovers up 3-0.

Nichols ran into two ut trouble in the second inning as well. Nichols walked Bucky Ludwig with two outs and Paul Ankiel, just off the injured list, hit his 2nd homerun, the 7th allowed this season by Nichols. 5-0 Houston.

Nichols replacement, Whitey Mathrwson gave the Phils a much needed four and a two- third innings of long relief to spare the bullpen. (4.2IP 3H 1R 2BB/4SO).

Houston added one more run in the 8th off a triring Mathewson on a single and two stolen bases (second and third) by Catcher Doc Jenkins.Ben Rodas came in and allowed Jenkins to score on a single by Bucky Lugwing.

March Phillips hoemred for the Phils in the 4th, the 5th for Phillips and 7th allowed by Emslie.

Eppa Chattam singled and stole second in the 6th for Philadelphia. Chatham went on to thrid on a throwing error by Jenkins. Luther Peck's sac-fly scored him.

Emslie ran out of gas in the 9th. with two outs. Phillips, Babe Wood and Louis Gigon gor to him for three singles and a run bringing in closer Al Boever to strike out January Ford to end the game and give Boever his 19th save.
