It is still a three team race in the National League. Houston's 37-24 record earns the RangeRovers a one game advantage over the Pittsburgh Pirates and the St Louis Cardinals.

Some incidentals concerning the National League

Houston, the first place team in the National League, has three All Star players, but no starters on the team. Starting pitcher Glen Emslie, 5-0 with a 1.76 ERA since joining Houston in a trade has carved out a spot for himself on the team for the second straight season. Emslie was 7-7 3.83 with Philadelphia last season.

Closer Al Boever (5-3 2.81 with 16 save in 1950 is having a much better season this year and is the number one contender for the ''Fireman of the Year Award". Boever is 2-0 2.20 with 22 saves in 31 appearances (32,2 innings pitched).

Other Houston All Stars are catcher Jim Casian batting 332 with 13 homeruns and 35 RBI is the reserve catcher after cooling off a bit after his hot streak where his batting average rose to san unbelievable .415 while catching every day.

Right fielder Tom Spooner is at .329 8 homeruns 28 runs batted in. Casian and Spooner are one-two in the Most Valable Player voting.

Rookie reliever Perry Nelson, 3-0 1.64, is fourth in the Rookie of ther Year voting.

The third place Cardinals dominate the All Star team with seven players currently on the roster. Cardinal fans have always supported their team very well by voting, and voting often, and this year is no exception.

Alex Waslwewski is a deserving starting pitcher with a 9-3 1.53 ERA. Pete Compton (.294 11 34) the reigning Gold Glove second baseman in the NL and in strong contention for another is a member as it starting pitcher Maury Moeller (8-3 3.20 ERA), shortstop Pat Charles (.308 7 47) and relief pitcher Raul Cree (1-1 0.95ERA) and first baseman Don White .317 11 26).

Montreal has four players; centerfielder Steve McRae (.354 9 24), Right fielder Trace Onslow ( .280 8 46), second baseman Harry Stuffel (.307 5 15) and third baseman Topper Freeze (.248 5 38).

Second place Pittsburgh also has four players on the squad; first baseman Matt Libran, (.285 13 38), outfielder Ray Holden (.303 11 45) and starting pitchers George Gonzalez (9-3 3.23) and and Don Foytack (7-3 2.82).

Colorado has three players; leftfielder Mike Noriega (.277 12 42), relief pitcher Pop Martin (5-4 3.07 12 saves), amd outfielder Win Werts (.306 6 28).

San Diego has one player the starting catcher Javy Mendoz (.315 12 23).

Glenn Emslie (7-5) stopped a two game losing streak for the RangeRovers with 8.2 innings of shutout baseball. Emslie gave up eight hits walked two and struck out six.

Emslie began the 9th inning and gave up no out singles to pinch hitter Reed Smith and Todd Taylor. He recovered to get two outs on the infield but walked Chico Gutterrez to load the bases. That brought in Al Boever with the bases loaded and trwo outs to get pinch hitter Ramon Gallaraga to ground out to shiortstop Jay Riley.

Losing pitcher Brett Guerin was charged with three earned run on eleven hits over just 4.1 inning. He was replaced by Warren Sisk who gave Chicago 4.1 innings of long relief gave up no earned runs (two unearned) on four hits.

That brought in Al Boever to get the last out, a ground out to shortstop Dick Moore to end the game. Boever now has 22 saves.

Houston scored two runs off Guerin in the first inning on a one out double by Paul Ankiel that skipped past double left fielder Derek Davis and a triple by Rick Casrey. Carey scored on a sacrifice fly by Jay Riley. 2-0 Houston.

The Rovers added on a run in the second when George Brashear singled. Doc Jenkins was robbed of extra bases
on a great sliding catch by left fielder Derek Davis. Emslie bunted with one out and moved the runner into scoring position wirth two outs for Bucky Ludwig.

Ludwig, having a great season batting .333 w/3 homerun and 13 runs batted in, singled to left field, driving in Houston's third run.

Second baseman Joe Shaw doubled off Sisk in the eighth and scored on a two base throwing error by second baseman Damaso Garcia. Bob Casian singled in Houston's final run.

5-0 Houston FINAL.

Second Game

Game two was scoreless over the first three innings as Chicago starting pitcher Jose Mercado issued two of the six walks that bedeviled him in the game and allowed one hit, Morales walked Paul Ankiel with one out and gave up a two out single to Jay Riley before getting Tom Spooner to fly out to center field. He gave up walk number two in the third inning to Bucky Ludwig, but it did no damage because Ludwig was caught stealing.

Allan Connolly was helped out with some good defense at the expense of Chicago first baseman Jesse Morales. Ludwig stole a hit from him on leftfield in the first inning and second baseman Joe Shaw made a diving stop of a hot shot in the hole and threw him out in the third.

Houston put two runs on the board in the fourth inning.

Riley singled and Wally Johnson hit his 6th homerun of the season. It was the 4th off Mercado in 33.1 innings pitched this season.

Mercado set Houston down in order in the 5th and gave up a lone single with one out to Riley in the 6th.

Connolly shut Chicago out on one hit, a lead off single by Ivan Samuel and a walk too Derek Davis with two outs in the second. He struck out two.

Chicago broke up the shutout with a solo homerun by Jeff Charboneau with one out in the 6th. Connolly rebounded from allowing his 12th homerun this season in 94 innings, he gave up 13 in 104 innings in 1950 by striking out both Ivan Samuel and Shannon Brett for his third and fourth strikeouts to end the inning. 2-1 Houston

Houston answered in the 7th.

Brashear walked and stole second base. Mercado walked Casian (5th walk by Mercado to put two on w/no outs. Connolly put down a good bunt to advance the runnners but it turned out to be a wasted out because Mercado issued walk number six to Ludwig to load the bases with one out. Pinch hitter Joel Edwards double to left field driving in Brashear and Casian.

4-1 Houston.

Connolly had a tough inning in the 8th inning. Pinch hitter Rob Driscoll walked, but Casian threw him out stealing. Charboneau followed with his second hit, a single. Morales was not robbed a third time as his single sent Charboneau to third base.

That was all for Connolly; 7.1 IO 6 H 1R/1ER 2BB/4SO..WP 7-2 with A 3.06 ERA. One homer allowed (12)

Ed Schrom was his replacement. Schrom struck out Brett and Samuel.

Doug Schooler struck out the side for Chicago in the 9th getting (Ludwig, Edwards and Carey).

Al Boever earned his 23rd save despite a leadoff walk to Todd Taylor and a singled by Davis. Aaron Smalley grounded into a 4-6-3 double play and Garcia ground out routinely to Johnson at third to end it.
