The Cardinals salvaged game three of their previous series with Montreal in extra inning (10 innings making St Louis 6-4 in extra innings), Raul Cree got the win in relief (2-1). The Red Birds returned home for an important series with Colorado because Pittsburgh the third team in the race is playing first place Houston setting up a situation where St. Louis could gain ground on one of them with a win.

Maury Moeller 8-3 went looking for his ninth win of the season (8-3) against Art Wylie (3-3.)..

Wyie allowed a first inning run when he walked Don White and Pete Compton hit the first of two douboles in the game. 1-0 St. Louis.

Colorado took a 2-1 lead in the 2nd on a two run homer by Deion Jones (7th) off Moeller, ther 11th this season off Moeller in 110.2 innings.

St. Louis locked the game up in the 4th with a five run outburst knocking Wylie out one out into the inning. Wylie gave up Compton's second double of the game and Charley Williams singled in Compton. (Williams 46th RBI of the season, 4th in the NL). Ben Powell followed that with a RBI single of his own scoring Willaims. Pat Charles and Ben Powell singled. Powell scored on a ground out by Jerry Turley.

That brought Hub Browne into the game. Browne retired The pitcher, Moeller, on a ground out to second. Powell to second base. Browne walked Rod Anderson and Don White to load the bases with one out and Tommy Panther's ringing double scored Powell and Anderson. Browne left after pitching one thriod of an inning allowing one hit one run and walking two.

His replacement was Joe Blocker who retired one batter, Compton the tenth batter in the inning on a 4-3 groundout.

6-2 St. Louis enroute to a 6-43 victory.


Houston 6 Pirates 3

Ray Valdes last won a game on July 28, game 104 he won his 4th game agaisnt seven losses in game 145 on September 12th. That halted a five game losing streak for Valdez.

Valdez went 7.1 innings and Pittsburgh scored three runs on eight hits off him. Valdez walked three and struck out eight.

Starting pitcher John Sweeney went five innings for the Pirates (six hits three runs one walk five strikeouts). Relief pitcher Lou Grant then faced three batters allowing a threerun hoimerun to the third, Tom Spooner. It was Spooner's 9th of the season and the 3rd hit off Grant in 28.1 innings.

That thriee run bomb broke a 3-3 tie giving Houston a 6-3 lead.

Ed Schrom did a good job of getting the final two outs of the 8th inning with Ray Holden on second base (single stolen base).

Al Boever worked the 9th inning for his 25th save. Boever has appeared in seven of Houston's last ten games saving five games, allowing only two hits and no runs with three walks.
