Cards win 4th straight!

ST. LOUIS CARDINALS 5 COLORADO 4

St. Louis has been on a major roll of late winning four straight and now holding second place all to itself with a 39-27 record just two games behind Houston.

Colorado took the first lead in the second 1-0 on a Pat Abbott RBI single.

Colorado's power took over in the middle innings. Bill Messersmith hit a solo homerun over the left field fence for Colorado in the 5th and Jack Alexander singled in two additional runs to build a 4-0 Colorado lead.

St Louis displayed some power as well Ben Powell homered, his 2nd. 4-1 Colorado. Pete Crompton doubled and scored the Cardinals second run in the 6th on a single by Charley Williams.

Williams hit a three run homerun in the eight that gave them the come back win.

The winning pitcher Raul Cree 3-1 and the loser was Irv Bell (0-1)

San Dioego 2 Montreal 0

Rod Bunning (7-5) went eight shutout inningsd giving up just three hits, all singles, walked two and struck out ten. Francisco Nunez pitcherd an inning for his 9th save.

Jose Davalillo hit a two riun homerun, his 7th, in the first inning off losing pitcher Dixie Loviglio (6-6) to put the surging Saints up 2-0.

Bunning was masterful for his eight innings and the owner and fans of the Saints are now all fired upo fot their next seroies with first place Houston.

The starters for the series are right handers Allan Connolly (7-2 3.06) and Mario Andujar (5-2 3.22) in game one.

Game two ..two more right handers; Charlie Onis (6-65 4.24) (13 homners allowed) vs Ross Cardwell (3-5 3.96) (10 homers allowed)..there may be a couple hit in this game ...you think??.

Game three LH Ray Valdes (4-7 4.58) vs Nathan Ferrall (5-0 1.99) Valdes has been slumping, Farrell is undefeated.

Houston 3 Pittsburgh 2

Houston won two of three from the Pirates dropping them into a third place tie with up and coming San Diego. By dropping one game the Rovers lost one game off their lead to the Cardinals who have win four straight.

The Pirates scored foirst in this one. Two All Stars figured in the scoring. Ray Holden tripled in the second inning. Matt Libron singled in the run.

1-0 Pirates.

Glen Jackson drew a walk in the 4th. Matt Lisban singled Ray Brown singled past shortstop Jay Riley scoring Jackson.

2-0 Pirates.

Bob Casian walked to begin the 7th. Wally Johnson singled to left field. Pinch hitter Paul Ankiel (for Jay Riley) hit a sacrifice fly to put Houston on the board 2-1.

In the 8th Houston finally attacked with full force. Pinch hitter Joel Edwards (for Julio McGee) singled. Pinch hitter Andy Benton (for Pitcher Carlos Rizzo) singled and stole second base. Edwards to thrid base. Benton stole second Bucky Ludwig's infield single socred Edwards tying the game 2-2.

Houston won the game off pitcher Henry Sutthoff thanks to an error by third baseman Ray Brown that allowed Wally Johnson to reach. George Brashear's single sent Johnson to thrid base. Reserve outfielder Dave Crawford singled in the winning run.

Rookie Perry Nixon (4-0) got the win.

Now bring on the Saints.
