Cardinals 3 Phils 2

Cardinals fifth straight win.

St Louis stayed relentlessly on the tail of the Houston Range Rovers with a 3-2 win over the Philadelphia Phillies. All Star Alex Waslewski (10-4) went eight innings scattered six hits, allowed two runs, walked one and struck out eight. Raul Cree, the reigning Fireman of the Year picked up his 16th save in 28 appearances for the Cardinals.

Pete Crompton, a red hot hitter of late (.306 12 Hrs., and three for four in this game, 3 runs 1 RBI), hit number 12 off Rick Wright (11th allowed) for a 1-0 Cardinal lead.

March Phillips tied it 1-1 in the 4th inning with his 7th of the season and just the 4th allowed by Waslewski (league batting .206).

Crompton imposed himself again in the 6th by drawing a lead off walk. Charley Williams doubled to center field scoring Crompton from first to put the Cardinals ahead 2-1.

The Phillies Vince Williams doubled to leftfield to start the 6th. Eppa Chatham's ground out to White at first moved Williams over to third base. Luther Pack just trying to make contact and get him in to score singled to leftfield to tie the game 2-2.

Jerry Turley led off the Cardinal 7th with a double but was tagged out at third on Waslewski's failed bunt attempt. Rod Anderson followed with a single to left to reignite the inning. Don White grounded to first for the second out with Anderson moving to second base. Panther struck out to waste the threat.

Crompton reached on an infield single to begin the Cardinal 8th. Charely Williams singled up the middle bringing in Ralph Talbot to face shortstop Pat Charles batting .311 with 7 homeruns and a league leading 52, then 53 RBI, after his game winning single.

Pirates 14 Chicago 6

The Pirates backed their ace George Gonzalez with 15 hits, including eight extra base hits to score 14 runs.

Matt Libran hit two homeruns, his league leading 15th and 16th and drove in four runs with three hits in the game. Ray Holden, batting .320 with 11 homeruns and 51 runs batted in, also had a three hits game including his 9th double. Mike Redmond went three for three with a single, double and triple, scoring three runs and driving in three.

Gonzalez went the distance giving up 9 hits six runs walked four and u-turned 9 tying Alex Waslewski (StL) for the most wins in the league.

Houston 6 San Diego 3

San Diego filled The Temple in San Diego to support their surging Siants in the series opener with first place Houston. Both teams were coming off series wins. San Diego came in off winng two of three frm Mointreal which allowed them toi catch Pittsburgh in the standing because the Pirates dropped two of three in Houston to the Rovers.

San Diego got off to a good start despit starter Mario Andujar walking the lead off batter, Bucky Ludwing. Second baseman Francisco Diaz made a great stop on a hard hit ball by Paul Ankiel and started a 4-6-3 double play. Andujar struck out Jay Riley to end the inning.

All Star catcher Javier Mendoza siezed the moment and drove one of Allan Connolly's fastball out of the park with two outs, his 13rth homerun of the season, the 13th hit off Connolly.

1-0 San Diego.

The ''other'' All Star catcher Bob Casian tied the game 1-1 with his 13th of the season in the 3rd inning, 3rd off Mendoza. The inning did not end there. Connolly and Ludwig both singled to left field and Mendoza loaded the bases with no outs by walking Ankiel. Riley's sacrifice fly put Houston up 2-1 ... Connolly tagged and scored).Carey's singled drove in Ludwig .. 3-1 Houston ...Veteran GAeorge Brashear singeld in Ankiel with the fourth run of the inning making the score 4-1 Houston.

Juan Carrasco got the final out of the inning as Mendoza just last 2.2 innings (5 hits 4 runs all earned 3 walks 1 strikeout)..

Ramon Carrasco hit a solo homerun off Connolly in the 5th (14th off Connolly). 4-2 Houston.

With two outs in the 6th Wally Johnson singled and Carrasco walked Tom Sppooner in front of Bob Casian who singled in run number 5 for Houston.

5-2 Houston.

Tom Spooner hit his 10th for Houston in the 9th and Javier Mendoza hit his second of the game for San Diego. Al Boever came in to pick up his26th save in the 6-3 FINAL.
