Houston 6 Phils 5

In game two both teams battled back and forth starting in the very first inning when both teams turned a double play to get out of the inning with a runner on.

Houston broke out of a scoring drought in the 3rd inning that had gone on for 11.2 innings. Infielder Dick Moore drew a walk from Phillie starter Don Nichols and stole second base. Valdez, under orders to bunt failed to get it down and with two strikes grounded meekly to Vince Williams at shortstop. Slumping Bucky Ludwig also grounded Williams for the second out. Nichols could not get out of it though, walked his third batter of the game, Rick Carey and Bob Casian on a hot streak singled in the run.

1-0 Houston.

Moore drew anotherv lead off walk in the bottom of the 5th and stole secodn for the second time as well. Nichols pitched for Houston and the veterans know his habits on the mound. He only throws over once. Valdez bunted perfectly gthis time getting Moore to third base with one out.Ludwig is slumping but he is a professional hitter and he got the run home with a ground out to first base.

2-0 Houston.

Nichols led off the top of the 6th with a single. Valdes suddenly could not find the plate, walked Edwards, Williams and Wood in succession to force in a run. (Nichols) 2-1 Houston. Tom Marnie hit a sac fly tying the game 2-2. Hart Hart grounded a single just past shortstop Jay Riley putting the Phillies ahead 3-2.

In the bottom of the 6th Houston pulled even again on a single by Casian and a double by Tom Spooner. 3-3.

Valdes recorded his last out in the top of the 7th when he fanned Al Gibson. Nichols reached for the second time on a two base error in center field by Rick Carey (dropped fly ball). (Valdes 6.1 IP 5H 4R/3ER 3BB/8SO) replaced by Ed Schrom (28th appearance 3.0 ERA).

Schrom's first two batters, Jimmy Edwards and Vince Williams, both singled. Williams singled drove in the inherited runner from Valdez, (Nichols), to make the score 4-3 Phillies. Schrom escaped without further scoring. 0.2 IP for Schrom 2H 0r/0ER 0BB/1SO)

In the bottom of the 7th Pinch hitter Georg Brashear(for Moore) singled. Pinch hitter Joel Edwards (for Schrom) both singled. Nichols was replaced with one out in the 6th by left hander Ralph Talbot with one out and runners on first and second. Brashear (10th) and Edwards (6th) pulled off a double steal to put runners on second and third with one out. Rick Carey's single to center field drove in both runners to make the score 5-4 Houston.

Perry Nixon (14th appearance 1.84 ERA) came in. Nixon walked Harry Hart with one out. Pedro Peraza geounded to second. Hart to second base with one out. Ken Bowen singled tying the game 5-5.

Don Schultz made his first appearance since being recalled. He gave up two two-out singled to Babe Woods and Tom Marnie putting runners on first and third with two out. Schultz escaped by getting Harry Hart to ground out to third baseman Wally Johnson.

In the bottom of the 9th Larry Johnston was on the mound for Philadelphia. Shaw flied to left to begin the inning. Pinch hitter Dave Crawford (for the pitcher, Schultz) grounded to third base...two out.

Bucky Ludwing 0 for his last 11 and 0-4 in the game singled to keep hopes alive. Rick Carey (.313 8 Hrs 27 RBI) drove him in with the winning run with his third RBI of the game to win it for Houston.

6-5 FINAL

The win did not gain the Rovers any ground as St Louis bounced back against San Diego for a 7-2 win keeping pace with Houston one game back.
George Friend got the win for St Louis (5-3)

Most of the damage was done early for the Cardinals. Charley Williams hit a two run homerun (13th) off Ross Cardwell (LP 3-7) and Pete Crompton added a two run double in the first inning. Friend the pitcher, drove in two runs in the 3rd with a double.
