Chuck Tanner NL Baseball

Post by jacktoast »

Some good pitching in the National League resulted in a pair of shutouts by Houston and Montreal pitchers. Some good hitting resulted in St Louis defeating San Diego 7-2 in the rubber game of their series that kept the Cardinals one game behind Houston.

Colorado pummeled the Chicago Wolves 14-2. Rob Abbott drove in five runs with three hits including his 9th homerun. Bill Smith got the benefit of all the runs to improve to 8-8.

Houston knocked off the Philadelphia Phillies 2-0 in the rubber game of their series behind Glenn Emslie (8-6).

The only hit allowed by Emslie over the eight innings he pitched came in the 3rd inning when Louis Gigon, traded away by Houston, led off with a single. Emslie worked magnificently worked around the hit by getting Ford to fly out to short center field, Rodney Gibson, the pitcher, bunted a ball back to Emslie, who made two errors in the game, but not on this play...he fired to Moore at second for a force out on Gigon. Vince Williams bounced into another force out to end the inning. (4-6).

Emslie's first error was a dropped throw from first baseman Andy Denton on a groundball hit by Williams in the first inning, Eppa Chatham grounded into a double play (6-4-3) to cover up that error.

Babe Wood reached on an error by second baseman Dickie Moore in the 5th. Ligon obliged by hitting into the Rovers second DP of the game 4-6-3.

Still no score in the 6th when Emslie made a bad throw to first for another error, the third of the game for Houston and fourth in two games. Babe Wood reached second on the play. Gibson's bunt advanced Wood to third with one out. Emslie walked Vince Williams who hits him well and then struck out Chatham who doesn't for the second out. Luther Pack then hit a can of corn to center field caught to end the inning by Rick Carey.

You have to score to win and Houston scored both its runs in the bottom of the 6th after that Houdini act by their pitcher.

Third baseman Wally Johnson walked. Andy Benton, hitting .307 and forcing his way into the lineup, doubled to center field scoring Johnson who has good speed. Riley flied to right. Moore struck out but Emslie jhelped his casue with a run scoring single driving in Benton with run number 2.

Emslie retired the last ix batters in a row that he faced before turning things over to closer Al Boever in the 9th. It was Boever's 38th appearance. He has a 1.85 ERA. Opponents are batting just .190 against him and have hit two homeruns.

Boever retired three in a row for his 29th save,

2-0 FINAL

Houston is one game in front of St. Louis with six games left in the season, Colorado and Pittsburgh are seven back and pretty much done. So the only thing left to decide is who has home field in the playoff and neither team is that concerned with that. St Louis is 22-14 at home and 24-15 away and Houston is 23-13 at home and 24-15 away
