NLCS Game by game....

Post by jacktoast »

Game One

St Louis and Houston battled all season for the national League Pennant. The Cardinals won sixteen of their final nineteen to finish with a 51-30 record, one better than Houston who went 12-7 down the stretch to post a final record of 50-31. The hot finish meant that the NLCS began in St Louis, a city that loves its baseball team.

As has happened all through out the Cardinals rich playoff and World Series history there was a parade in downtown St Louis and festivities right up to game time when the 33rd President of the United States, Harry S Truman, from Independence, Missouri, 240 miles west of Sr. Louis, threw out the first pitch.

The game was played under sunny skies with the temperatures in the mid 70s.

Maury Miller, the 4th place finisher in the Cy Young Voting, with a 11-4 3.32 ERA started for St. Louis against right hander Glenn Emslie who finished 9-6 with two different teams with a 2.33 ERA.

The Cardinals scored two early runs in the bottom of the second to the delight of the sell out crowd. Jerry Turley smashed a two run homerun off Emslie. Emslie allowed 12 during the regular season and the opposition hit .200 off him.

The Cardinals mounted another threat in the 4th. Pat Charles and Ben Powell singled sending Charles to third base. Two outs later Rod Anderson made it 3-0 St. Louis.

Moeller went 7.2 innings allowed no runs on seven hits walked two and struck out eight.

After he departed the Cardinal bullpen did yoeman like work in closing out the game. First John Marion got the final out of the eight inning after a tiring Moeller walked Paul Ankiel with one out.

Raul Cree, the St Louis closer who had 21 saves during ther regular season and was Fireman of the Year in 1950 with 29 got the final three outs for a save.

The Cardinals took a one game lead with the second game also being played in the Gateway City.
