GAME TWO NLCS

Post by jacktoast »

HOUSTON 2 CARDINALS 0

At St. Louis on 10/14/51 Game Two (12 innings)

Another very pleasant fall day greeted the fans for game two and the crowd buoyed by the win in game one was in a benevolent mode at the start of the game.

Charlie Onis (7-8 4.11) started for Houston and probably gave the Houston team the pitching edge over Frank Roth (5-4 4.57). Two of Roth's losses were administered by Houston. That did not pan out in this one as Roth retired the first sixteen batters that he faced before giving up the first hit of the game, one out triple to Jay Riley, that was more well place than well hit in the 7th inning. Pitcher Charlie Onis' fly ball to center fielder was not deep enough to score Riley so he stayed on third. Bucky Ludwig grounded out to third baseman Ben Powell keeping the game scoreless.

John Marion took over in the 8th inning after Roth allowed a lead off walk to Rick Carey and a stolen base. Marion retired three straight batters.

The game remianed scoreless after 9 innings.

Houston went 7-0 in extra innings in the regular season and the thought of that gave them great confidence and it the 12th inning it paid off.

Sugar Loman was on the mound to begin the inning.

Bucky Ludwig drew a lead off walk to anguished the groans from the crowd that had for the most part stayed around. Wally Johnson doubled driving in Ludwig to put Houston ahead 1-0.

Raul Cree, St Louis' best reliever, came in. Tom Spooner grounded out to second base. Johnson moved to third base. Bob Casian hit a flyball to center field deep enough to score Johnson.

St. louis stranded eleven riunners on base in this excrusiating loss for the Cardinals that evened the series giving Houston a road win that gives them the home field advantage now.
