Cincinnati (32-21), Atlanta (30-23), and Pittsburgh (29-24) are the top three teams in a close National League race. Philadelphia defeated Atlanta 3-1 to move one game over .500 is five games behind the leader.

Cincinnati 5 Brooklyn 0

Jonathan Demme (5-3) went 7.2 innings gave up five hits no runs walked two and struck out seven for the win.

Cincinnati scored three times in the 5th inning to take a 3-0 lead. Hick Markum hit a two run triple. The added a run in the 6th on Scott Smitt's run scoring single and the final run in the 9th when Ken Harrikkala singled and scored on a double by Hickum.

Phils 3 Atlanta 2

Catcher Charlie Carrasco hit a one out bases empty homerun in the 3rd inning off Kolbie Elbie (LP 5-5) to tie the game 1-1.

Carlos Cruz scored with two outs in the 5th inning on Terry Haughey's single to put Atlanta back in front 2-1.

The Phillies ralled late for two runs to win their 27th game (27-26) of the season in the 7th inning. Pinch hitter Frank Stephenson, batting for Carl Kapler, walked and stole second. Pinch hitter batting for pitcher Syd Mora, doubled in both Stephenson and Carrasco. 3-2 Phils, the final score.
