Some free baseball in the most recent games as both the Philadelphia-Brooklyn game as well as the first place Cincinnati Red Devils and Pittsburgh games both went eleven innings. More on that later.

The statistical batting leaders in the triple crown category are predominately from first place Cincinnati. Two of the top three homerun hitters are Red Devils; Cincy's Ralph Kuhn (14) leads the NL, and Huck Marcum (12) is second followed by Atlanta's Ismael Hamlin is third with 11.

The RBI leaders are Hamlin with 58, Jay Turner of Cincinnati has 50 and Kuhn is third with 47.

The batting average leaders are Dan Terpko of Brooklyn at .370, Philadelphia shortstop Bill Springer is batting .353 in second place and Hamlin of Atlanta is batting .347

Philadelphia has complete control of the stolen base race. Seven Phillies are listed in the top nine base stealers. Roger Hall is the leader with 21, Edgar Enright is second with 18, Bill Springer third with 16, fourth place belongs to Bob Springer 14, John Benton 14 is number five, Tony Curtis (11) is six and in 9th place is center fielder Frank Stephenson (10).

Philadelphia 4 Brooklyn 3

11 Innings

Philadelphia had four runs on nine hits and made one costly error.

Brooklyn was limited to three runs on ten hits and made no errors. They scored all their runs in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game and send it into extra innings.

Philadelphia completely controlled the game over the early and middle innings. Bob Erickson's two out first inning single scored Roger Hall who singled with one out and stole second (21st).
1-0 Phillies.

Tony Curtis used his great foot speed on the bases to put himself into scoring position, a one out third inning single and his 11th stolen base of the season. John Benton fresh of the disabled list singled him in. 2-0 Phillies.

The Phillies third run was scored in the top of the 8th. Curtis doubled with one out. Brooklyn made a pitching change, Right hander Ed Throop replaced right hander John Ramsey. (7.1 IP 6H 3R/3ER 1BB/5SO)

Hall flied to center. Two outs. John Benton singled to right field driving in the run. 3-0 Phillies

Phils starter Shep Kroner, was dominant early, stranding three runners over the first six innings striking out eight. Benton helped him out in the fourth and sixth innings when he started double plays.

Erickson threw out John Davison at the plate in the seventh inning when he tried to score from second on a single by Billy Gruewald.

Brooklyn scored three times in the ninth inning to tie the game after two were out. Davidson struck out to start the inning and Al Benitez popped out to Enright at first. Benton booted a ground ball hit by Grunewald for an error to give Brooklyn life. Mark Lehman and Jiggs Crompton followed with singles.J Grunewald scored on Crompton hit. 3-1. Bill Barron singled in the second run. Pinch hitter Jay Baller walked to load the bases. andeff Crompton singled with one out. Tommy Wilbur walked. Kroner struck out Terpko tap to the mound result in a force at home to end the inning with the bases loaded.

After the game Benton told reporters. "Errors happen. I didn't do it on purpose. The good thing is we came back from that to win the game.''

Philadelphia won it in the top of the 11th after Emil Calhoun pitched a couple of scoreless innings in relief. Terry Creger was on the mound for Brooklyn to start the 11th. Hall led off with a double. Benton was called out on strikes. Bob Erickson doubled in Hall. 4-3 Kansas City.

Kroner on his outing; I had a very good fastball early, my curve and change up got me through the middle innings but I lost command of the fast ball later and they began to get to me. Didn't get the win but the team did so a good effort all around.''

Cincinnati 1 Pittsburgh 0

11 innings

Mike Hamlin went 8.2 shutout innings innings for the Red Devils before giving way (and not so willingly) to Dick Carr in the 9th. Pittsburgh had just four hits and one walk. Hamlin stranded all those runners. Hamlin was pulled in the ninth with two outs after Hector Wylie singled. Hamlin looked startled to se the manager coming out and was visibly angry once he reached the dugout throwing his glove against the dugout wall.

Carr got an inning ending ground out and Dirty Dave Nastu took over for the final two innings and picked up the win (3-0) when Ralph Kuhn singled leading off the 11th inning. Davis Spencer walked and Scott Smith singled home the winning run with his second hit of the game.

Pittsburgh left ten runners on base in the game.
