The Phillies are now 33-31 (.516) in third place five games out of first place after defeating seventh place San Diego 4-2.

San Diego falls to 31-33 seven games behind first place Cincinnati.

Jason Kusick (4-8) made the start for Philadelphia and went 7.1 innings allowing seven hits and six walks but only two runs (earned) striking out two.

Kusick's lone bad inning came in the 3rd when he issued a pair of walks to Dave Face and Wade Holly and a run scoring single to Lee Crawford. 1-0 San Diego.

The Phillies tied the game in the 7th when Frank Stephenson hit a two-run homerun, his 4th with Enright scoring ahead of him.

2-1 Phillies.

San Diego tied the game in bottom of 7th. Orator Hearn hit a solo homerun, his 3rd.

The Phillies took the lead for good victimizing Joe Troedson in the 8th inning, Bob Erickson singled, Tony Curtis walked and Edgar Enright singled in both runners for a4-2 lead that was protected by the bullpen.

Ryoichi Iizuka got the final two outs in the eight and Orlando Nokes earned his 13th save of the season pitching his way out of a two on no out jam.

Nokes gave up a single to Duane Lee, a bunt single to pinch hitter Jim Beckwith before getting Duane Face and Wade Holly to fly out to center field.
