The streak is over

Post by dabigtrain »

After spring training, the Milwaukee Crullers were distressed to discover they didn't even have a halfway decent third baseman on their 40-man roster. So, they called up recently waived CF Derek Abbott and told him to stand on the left side of the infield and try not to get. "If it's hit right to you, try to catch it, but for God's sake, don't lunge and dive and turn a harmless single to left into a two-base error." Abbott took them at their word, and through 44 appearances totaled 71 total chances, all without an error, for a world-record-terrible range factor of 1.7.

Sadly, his bid for late-career perfection ended with a two-base error in the seventh inning today against Brooklyn. Crullers fans can now count the days until farmhand Pud Irwin completes his LF-to-3b conversion and shows them how a real 3B boots grounders.

Well, only impressive in his ability to stand as still as possible.
