Rattlesnakes 2 SFG 1

The Florida Rattlesnakes have rebounded after losing four straight to begin the season with five straight wins to improve to 8-8 and move into a second place tie with four other teams, all on losing streaks of various lengths. Montreal has lost four straight, San Francisco two, and both Pittsburgh and San Diego have lost one.

The Snakes have prospered on pitching. Their staff ERA is a respectable 3.54, third in the league and they are hitting just .235 as a team with 14 homeruns (7th) and 71 runs scored.

During their winning streak the Snakes have gone 2-0 in extra innings, taking Pittsburgh 4-2 in 10 innings to win that series two games to one and initiate the winning streak. The then won a marathon 15 inning game agaisnt the Cubbies 7-6.

In that game The Snakes took a 6-1 lead in their five run 6th inning. Dee Young, and pitcher Ray Klink had run scoring singles, Lefty Mathis and Milo Lowdermilk, run scoring doubles and Kevin LaMott chipped in with a sacrifice fly.

Chicago came back with two in the 7th and three in the 9th to tie it off Closer Bob mensor. The 9th inning rally denied the win for Klink who went 8 innings allowed 10 hits and 3 runs, all earned, walked 1 and struck out 7. Klink remained 1-1 w/a 5.13 ERA.

Dick Ussat, Mike Richter, and Bucky Eubanks (WP 3-0) redeemed the bullpen with five scoreless inning of relief work.

Eric Armstrong hit a game winning homerun off losing pitcher Al Btrummett (3IP 4H 1R/1ER 1BB/3SO) leading off the inning. It was the 3rd of the season for Armstrong, and his first career walkoff homerun, and the 2nd allowed by Brummett in 6.2 innings pitched.

That win gave the Rattlesnakes chance to reach the .500 mark in their next game, which was another close hard fought come from behind game won by Florida 2-1 over San Francisco.

Howie Hargreaves started for Florida and picked up his first win of the season (1-3) with eight impressive inings. Hargreaves allowed only three hits. Two of them were two out vsingles in the 1st inning to Pep Demichele and Felix Bedell. The other hit was a fourth inning solo homerun by switch hitter Jose Spindell, his first homer of the season putting the Gisants ahead 1-0.

Florida came back in the 5th inning to take a 2-1 lead they never relinguished on a triple by Jerry Poland and a two run shot to deep right field by Lefty Mathis.
