Recapping the Brooklyn - San Francisco Giants series at Ebbets Field before a capacity crowd of 39,912 fans and the entire series was broadcast nationally on television and radio by NBC.
Brooklyn took the field on the top of the first inning behind starting pitcher Dodgers ace Russ Davey, a twenty nine year old right hander from Dallas, Texas. This would not be one of Davey's better starts of the season as he went only six innings before exiting with the score tied 5-5. Davey gave up five runs (four earned) walked three and struck out seven.
San Francisco took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, scoring an unearned run because of an error by shortstop Bill Mashore. and a RBI triple by Jim Funk. Both came with two outs.
Davey's pitching opponent, Lou Novikoff did not have a good beginning in the first either. Lead off Batter Buck Thomas doubled down the right field line. Hugo Gonzalez advanced him to third base with a ground out to second base, fielded spectacularily by second baseman George Parks. Mashore, a natural third baseman who is filling in for injured shortstop Bob Jorgenson, atoned for his first inning error with a single to centerfield driving in Thomas, tying the game 1-1. Bill Hicks put Brooklyn in front 2-1 with a double into the right field gap. Mashore challenged the arm of Funk in right field to score.
Thomas got into the mix again in the bottom of the third inning by drawing a walk form Novikoff. Gonzalez fouled out to second baseman Parks down the right field line after a long run. Mashore came through with his second hit of the game and picked up another RBI as well as Thomas charged home. Walt Ramsey drove in Mashore to put Brooklyn in front 4-1.
In the fifth inning Marcus Anderson singled, stole second base, and scored on pitcher Lou Novikoff's single. 4-2 Brooklyn now.
The six was Davey's last inning as San Francisco solved him for three runs on for three runs on three hits and some control issues did not help the Brooklyn right hander either. Davey gave up a one out single to Spindel, walked Eddie Encarnacion and hit Marcus Anderson with a pitch to load the bases.
All three would score.
Spindel came in on a ground out by catcher Karl Maun and both runners advanced as well.
Pitcher Lou Novikoff had a career at with the bat driving in Encarnacion for his second run batted in with his second base hit. Novikoff was 0 for 13 with seven strikeouts entering the game.
Anderson socred on a double to left field by Robby Sutherland.
Bill Hicks hit his 4th homerun of the season off Novikoff in the sixth inning to tie the game 5-5.
That was the last batter Novikoff faced. He was replaced by Buddy Cimoli who extracted the Giants from the inning without any further scoring.
It was too late anyway for Brooklyn's bullpen put a python like strangle hold on the game.
Fred Plunkett allowed one single in the seventh, but pitched around it striking out the side, to help his cause to remain on the roster.
Bill Hicks hit his 5th homerun (second of the game) in the bottom of the 8th inning to put Brooklyn in front 6-5.
Ryan Horsman struck out two of the three batters he faced in the eighth inning and woud be the winning pitcher (1-0).
Tony Post picked up his 11th save recording one strikeout in the inning giving the bullpen six strikeouts over the last three innings.

San Francisco evened the series with a 5-4 come from behind win in game two before another capacity crowd that went home disappointed.
The Dodgers as is their habit scored early off Giants starting pitcher Jerry Stephens in the bottom of the second inning. Stephens walked the first batter, Henry Brewington. Brewing advanced to second on a stolen base.
Catcher Phillip Allen advanced the runner to third base with a sharp grounder to Larkin at third. Brewington advanced to third base.
Thomas walked and Ferguson singled to right field driving in Thomas. 1-0 Dodgers.
Thomas doubled the lead in the bottom of the 4th with Allen aboard, his 5th homerun, the 3rd allowed by Stephens in 29.2 innings this season.
3-0 Dodgers.
That lead completed evaporated in the sixth inning when San Francisco exploded for four runs off stating pitcher Mike Mirabelli. The Giants had four hits in the inning, Dimichele doubled and Parks followed with a RBI single. Parks stole second before Sutherland flied out to center field for the first out. Rich Larkin's single to right field scored Parks. Larkin went to third base on a single by Encarnacion. and Jim Turk doubled to left field driving in both runners. Mirabelli left with two outs (5.2 innings allowing seven hits and four runs three walks and six strikeouts). Francisco Pickett got the final out and pitched a scoreless seventh recording one strikeout.
San Francisco led 4-3 after seven, but Brooklyn tied it in the bottom of the 8th. Don Roa walked Gonzalez. Dave Ciardi singled the runner to third but was caught stealing. Ramsey was out 6-3 for out number two. That however did score Gonzalez to tie the game 4-4.
Ray Horsman he inning pitcher in game one took the loss in game two. Horsman walked Jim Turk to start the ninth inning. Charlie Gardiner struck out. Alan Young singled to center field and stole second base with pinch hitter Ed Phillips at bat. Phillips grounded out to first and Young scored.

Game three
The San Francisco win set up a rubber game for the series in game three and a Giants win would give tem a share of first place.
Mark Hudson had other idea. Hudson gave the Dodgers their only good start by a starter thus saving an overworked bullpen. Hudson went eight inning gave up five hits and three runs with six strikeouts. His six walks were the only thing marring his performance.
Tony Post who had game two off came in fresh abut still had a difficult time closing out the Giants. Robby Sutherland led off the frame with a single. Post walked George Parks to further increase the stress in the Brooklyn dugout. Pip Dimichele struck out for the first out. Jim Funk, reached on an infield single that loaded the bases with one out as the crowd groaned. Spindel flied to shirt left field. Jim Hicks came to make the catch and got the ball back to the infield before any runner could advance. Post struck out Mike Nealon to end the game and earned his 12th save.
The Dodgers had things going their way earlier scoring three runs in the 4th inning on three hits. Bill Mashore singled to left field, Bill Hicks followed with his 6th homerun of the season and the third of this series to put Brooklyn ahead 2-0. The Dodgers added a third run when Walt Ramsey walked, stole second and scored on henry Brewington two out single.
Danny Clemons hit his first career homerun in the 5th inning to up the lead to 4-0.
Jesse Hughes walked and stole second to start the sixth inning. Brewington, one of several players who answered the call in this series, singled in Hughes.
San Francisco put up three runs in the seventh off Hudson on a walk, double triple and a homerun. Alan Young hit lead off homerun off Hudson. Dimichele had a run scoring triple, Funk finished off the assault with a double driving in Dimichele.
