Elmer ''Suitcase'' Bryant

Post by basilrathbonejr »

Over baseball's long ad well documented history there have been players who have had the good/bad fortune of being traded/released many times. Some have been traded because they were young and had potential to help the acquiring club in the future, or were an experienced veteran ho was in the twilight of a good career and had enough left to be the difference for a contending team in need of just such a player.

The Charlie Grimm League has one such player; Elmer Bryant aka ''Suitcase'' Bryant.

The 24 year old Bryant was a 29h round draftee out of LSU, by Brooklyn.

His major league experience consists of just one game in which he made three plate appearances, got one hit and had one walk, scored a run and struck out once. Bryant started in center field and handled two chances without an error.

Other than that he has been a frequent traveler having played in Scranton (AAA), Brooklyn, Scranton again, Traded to Minnesota, sent to Dallas-Ft. Worth AAA, traded back to Brooklyn, sent back to Scranton, and then traded to Chicago who sent him to their AAA farm club in Dallas-Ft. Worth.

The most obvious reason for his travels is that he was a minor league player for the Brooklyn Dodgers, who trade their minor leaguers for roster improvement for the first place major league team and scour the waiver wires for anyone breathing who might win a game for them.

Other minor league players who have made multiple appearances on the transaction wires are outfielder Albert Wright (3), catcher Ed Smith (3), pitcher Don Ferrer (3), and outfielder Eddie Fisher (3) and pitcher Ryan Valantinetti and of Sean Garcia with two.

Now if only the Cubbies would hang onto him, he could unpack that suitcase.
