Brooklyn 5 San Diego Outlaws 3

Post by larrysiegfried20 »

Brooklyn and Florida remained tied for first place with identical 38-27 (.585) records.

Both teams have won two straight after Brooklyn forge the deadlock with a 6-4 win over Montreal on September 10th. Neither team has been al that hot in recent days, Florida has lost eight of its last eleven which allowed Brooklyn the opportunity to catch up.

Starting pitcher Mike Mirabelli (6-2) went six and two thirds innings, gave up three earned runs on seven hits, walked three and struck out eight to garner his third straight win since he last lost on August 19th.

The potent top half of the Dodger batting order came through multiple times in this game as well. Second baseman Buck Thomas led off the game with his 5th homer of the season. The blast which went to left centerfield came off starting pitcher Sam Lord, fifth allowed by Lord in 65.2 innings this season.

San Diego came right back in the second inning to score two runs and take a 2-1 lead on Scott Guzman's two out double.

The score of the game see-sawed back and forth in the early and middle innings. Brooklyn took a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning when Hugo Gonzalez, leading the National League in hitting with a whooping .409 batting average, double(15th) to left field and third baseman Bill Mashore followed with his 10th double of the season to drive in Gonzalez. Center fielder Dick Smith hit one of the two doubles he had in the game to plate Mashore with the go-ahead run. 3-2 Brooklyn.

Once again San Diego changed the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning. Dick Souchok and Art Tiefenthaler both singled putting runners on first and third and the pitcher grounded into a double play scoring Souchok. Guzman struck out to end that inning.

Thomas made anther mark on the game in the top of the fifth inning when he singled to center field, stole his 24th base of the season (ranks second in the NL behind teammate Jim Pate, not playing in this game). After Dauss flied out, Bob Jorgenson singled in Thomas with the go-ahead run.

Brooklyn added an insurance run onto that 4-3 lead in the eighth inning off relief pitcher Scott Shaw.

Jorgenson singled on a ground ball up the middle. Shaw walked Gonzalez to put runners on first and second with no outs. Jorgenson stole third base, his 15th steal of the year. Gonzalez was caught stealing second (9th) for the first out. Mashore singled for his second RBI of the game putting the game into the worthy hands of Brooklyn's bullpen.

Tony Post got the last out of the seventh inning and pitched the eighth before handing the lead over to closer Tomas Estrada to convert his 15th save in the ninth inning.

The Dodgers have benefitted from having not one but two "Swiss Army Knife" players on the roster this season. Tom Dauss and his .300 batting averages has played seven different positions; 4 at 1B, 7 at 2B, 5 at shortstop, 7 at 3B, 3 in left field, 10 in CF, 15 in RF and pinch hit 11 times.

Sarge Scarritt (.250) has played 19 games at first, 2 at second, 4 at third base, 11 at shortstop, 2 in leftfield. 3 in centerfield, and has pinch hit twice. Two players offering so much versatility and good bats to off set any defensive drop off is a valuable tool for any manager.
