BROOKLYN 5 SAN DIEGO 4

Brooklyn swept San Diego in San Diego to finish the season 9-3 against the Outlaws, 5-2 n San Diego. The win also allowed the Dodgers to maintain a statistical tie for first place in the National League with the Florida Thunder. Florida righted its ship and steamed to three straight wins as well over the Montreal Warriors in Miami.

Third place San Francisco is now five games behind the two co-leaders after dropping the finale of a three game series with fourth place Chicago, six games behind.

Brooklyn is 39-27 and trying to win the National League pennant for the second time in three season. Brooklyn won the World Series in 1950 but were a distant sixth in 1951 as Florida took the pennant only to have the upstart Pittsburgh Cyclones win the NLCS and lose the fall classic to New York.

Twenty seven year old Bill Woodward (9-3 3.51) went eight innings in this key contest, gave up seven hits, walked one and struck out two.

The low strikeout total was uncharacteristic because Woodward is fourth in the league with 91 strikeouts, but highly significant because Woodward pitched to contact magnificently in this game, getting ten assists from his infielders who turned two double plays in the first and third innings by Bill Hicks drove in Gonzalez. Rookie Dick Smith and seven putouts by the outfielders on flyballs.

The Dodgers exploded for five runs in the top of the fourth inning off San Diego starter and loser (5-7) Norm Hutchinson. Three doubles with no one out, by Buck Thomas, a line drive that eluded centerfielder Horace Davis, an RBI double by Tom Dauss, and a the third two bagger by magic wand hitting Hugo Gonzalez, batting .423 brought in two runs.

A one out single by Bill Hicks drove in Gonzalez with run number three and rookie Dick Smith hit his first major league homerun to scpore Hick and give Brooklyn a 5-0 lead.

Woodward had a four hit shutout going entering the eighth inning when San Diego got to him for a walk and three hits to score three times. Horace Davis' 9th homerun of the season, the 14th in 115.1 innings pitched by Woodward, accounted for all three runs.

Closer Tomas Estrada came in to pitch the ninth and gave up a homerun to Rebel Corbin and a walk to Dick Souchock, with one out, but struck out both Scott Guzman and Pat Lopez to end the game and pick up his 16th save.
