League notes

Post by larrysiegfried20 »

As the season winds down Brooklyn's Hugo Gonzalez has a chance to do two extraordinary things, win the triple crown and bat over .400.

Gonzalez is having a career year batting .423 to this point which tops Chicago's Paul Stewart by 90 points. Gonzalez, a first baseman, with a career .337 career batting average right now, hit only .242 with four homeruns and 16 runs batted in last season after missing 29 games with a broken wrist. Gonzalez missed 33 games in 1950 also, with a broken collar bone.

He has been healthy this year, appearing in 59 of Brooklyn's 66 games this far, and his other stats reflect his banner season as well. Gonzalez has hit 13 homeruns, which leads the league by one over three others, with 12, has a league best 85 hits, four more than Pittsburgh's Luis Robinson, one of the three batters with 12 homers, Gonzalez is third in runs scored (44), first in slugging (.736), OBP (.470), OPS (1.207), and doubles (16).

He is first in MVP votong as well.
