Brooklyn 6 Florida 5 Hockett loses no hitter in 7th inning.

Post by larrysiegfried20 »

Game two of the Florida Brooklyn series seem to be in the bag for Brooklyn over the first eight innings only to come close to escaping in the ninth. The Dodgers had scored six runs to build up a seemingly comfortable lead.

Here's what happened at Ebbets Field.

Brooklyn took advantage of a walk by Florida starting pitcher Rich Gumbert in the second inning to score their first run. Gumbert walked Hugo Gonzalez, who stole his 16th base, and scored on a single by Walt Wilkinson.

Wilkinson hit his 11th homerun of the year in the fourth inning to double the lead and Bill Hicks hit his seventh to make it 3-0. The two homers were the 10th and 11th hit off Gumbert in 87 innings.

After Hucks homered, Sarge Scarritt singled and scored on a single by Jim Pate to put the Dodgers up 4-0.

The Dodgers scored two runs in the eighth inning off relief pitcher Bob Mensor. Gonzalez singled and stole second. Hick, now red hot after coming out of an extended slump, doubled, driving in his second run of the game.

Bucky Eubanks replaced Mensor and gave up a run scoring single to Bruce Kaufman.

All the Dodger scoring was anticlimactic compared to what was happening with Alvin Hockett on the mound. hockett flirted with a no hitter for six and a third innings before Kevin LaMotte broke it up in the seventh inning with a one out singel. The only base runner prior to that was a third inning walk to Milo Lowdermilk.

Good defensce had carried the day for Brooklyn. Third baseman Tom Dauss made a good play to rob LaMotte of a hit in the first inning. Center fielder Jim POate made a sensational running catch on the warning track of a liner by Bill Orosco in the ffifth inning.

In the ninth inning the defense that defense fell apart. Pate dropped a fly ball hit by Rich Sosa for a two base error and Steve Walker reached on an error gy first baseman Hugo Gonzalez. Sosa went to third base on that error.

Jerry Poland grounded to shortstop and Sosa scored on that play to put Florida on the scoreboard. LaMotte got his second hit of the game, a double to centerfield scoring Walker.

Roy Aldred replace Hockett and got the big second out by striking out Dennis Reinbach. The ball started bouncing Florida's way at the pont. Eric Armstrong swung from his heals with all his mite and dribbled one slowly down the third base line for an infield single.

Aldred departed and closer Tomas Estrada came in. Bill Orosco hit one off the handle of his bat that fell in in front of right fielder Bruce Kaufman. Dee young got good wood on a Estrada pitch and doubled in two runs to bring Florida to within one.

Estrada retired the next batter, Lowdermilk, on a fly ball to Pate in center which he caught easily to end the game and give the Dodgers a two game lead and valso insure that no matter what happens in game three they will be in foirst place upon completion of this series.

Hockett got the win to improve to 8-4. (8.1IP 2 hits 3R/0 ER 1BB/3SO).

The two outs obtained by Estrade earned him his 17th save.
