2030 JJL Draft Review

Post by TheBigKahuna0 »

Well that was a stinker. This draft was pretty rough, but a couple of late picks were impressive. Check out the new grades for the 2031 draft.

1) Anaheim Earthquake - Andy Acuna - CF
Acuna is an import ready to go right now. He has plus power to go with a good glove. Going first overall says more about the draft class than his ability. Still, a team in a deep rebuild could have gone after a younger prospect. Instead, Anaheim will dedicate more attention to those already in it's fairly deep system.
Future Comparison: Andy Acuna
ETA: Now
Player Potential: B
Organizational Fit: C
Overall Grade: B-

2) Philadelphia Athletics - Orestes Dale - SP
Dale is not have as high of a ceiling as other prospects selected in this position, but again, that's a product of this draft. At B/D+, he has an uphill climb to become a useable player. There's a little room in the minors for him, so he'll get a shot to develop at least for a year.
Future Comparison: Champ Driessen
ETA: 2036
Player Potential: C
Organizational Fit: B-
Overall Grade: C+

3) Seattle Steelheads - Fred Grimm - RP
Clearly on the look for pitching, Seattle snatches up Grimm 3rd overall. Grimm is a more polished product as a 20 year old and is close to major league caliber control. His velocity is not far behind. He'll look for some CP's in Seattle's crowded (and pitching deprived) minors.
Future Comparison: Mike Cauldwel
ETA: 2034
Player Potential: B+
Organizational Fit: A
Overall Grade: A-

4) St Louis Browns - Ossie Wera - SP
Wera instantly becomes the top pitching prospect in St. Louis while sporting a nearly-ready skill set. At A-/C+, he's not the ideal balance but should progress quickly to help the club rebuild. Mid-rotation starter potential is there with a shot at leading a rotation with some luck.
Future Comparison: Ozzie Carlson
ETA: 2033
Player Potential: B
Organizational Fit: A
Overall Grade: B+

5) St Louis Browns - Eiji Teramae - RF
Picking twice in a row, the Browns got a solid pitching prospect then decided that was enough. In Teramae, the Browns have a 31 year old B overall outfielder. With a stock of red-letter outfielders already on the roster, there's not much room for Teramae to make an instant impact. He's not much of a mentor either. Unless some deals are made, he might not get called up.
Future Comparison: Eiji Teramae
ETA: Now
Player Potential: D
Organizational Fit: F
Overall Grade: D

6) Cincinnati Blackened Blowfish - Jim Callahan - 2B
You read that right. Callahan is basically a young version of this drafts #1 pick. He will have tremendous power when he gets his shot although contact will be a struggle. He's in a perfect spot with the incumbent 2nd basemen for the Blowfish set to decline right around the time he's ready to go.
Future Comparison: Andy Acuna
ETA: 2035
Player Potential: B+
Organizational Fit: A
Overall Grade: A-

7) Kansas City Monarchs - Pete Selma - SP
With plenty of young pitching recently promoted, there wasn't much left on the farm. Selma replaces some impressive prospects as the top arm in the Monarch system. His B+/D+ split leaves a lot of risk and he'll be watched closely as KC hopes he can get out of the D range soon.
Future Comparison: Derrick Klimchock
ETA: 2036
Player Potential: B-
Organizational Fit: A
Overall Grade: B

8) Chicago Beagles - Ramon Hutcheson - RP
The Beagles ended last season with a combined 29 CP's dedicated to a pair of players aged 27 and 28. To say a youth infusion was needed at the position is an understatement. Enter Hutcheson, a well balanced 20 year old arm with some potential. He should do better than his future comparison and would be a huge get if he can eventually eat up starter innings.
Future Comparison: Doc Cotter
ETA: 2035
Player Potential: B
Organizational Fit: B+
Overall Grade: B+

9) Cleveland Tomahawk Chops - Wedo Livingston - RP
Wedo is a 23 year old pitcher that is likely near a promotion. That promotion, however, likely won't bring much success. A year in the minors could get him up to A-/B and a lot of innings after that could make him a useable piece.
Future Comparison: Jim McManus
ETA: 2032
Player Potential: C+
Organizational Fit: B
Overall Grade: B-

10) Washington Halos - Nobutoshi Takahashi - RF
Another indication of this low quality draft, the Halos picked up an import that likely would last until the late 2nd round in a normal draft. Takahashi does a decent job of slap hitting, but can't run and has no range in the field. He is a good mentor, so maybe he'll fill a need on a rebuilding team.
Future Comparison: Nobutoshi Takahashi
ETA: Now
Player Potential: D
Organizational Fit: D
Overall Grade: D

11) Miami Yams - Bob Newman - RP
Possibly a year or two from a rebuild, the Yams went with a long-term pitching prospect. Newman will be a reliever in the long run and is young enough to develop some good skills. It's a good fit for both parties and you should see Newman in the orange and green in the late innings down the road.
Future Comparison: Don Hurtado
ETA: 2036
Player Potential: B
Organizational Fit: B+
Overall Grade: B+

12) Boston Red Sox - Fred Miller - SS
The Red Sox have to be thrilled with this pickup at 12th overall. Miller is a power-hitting infield prospect that should have a great glove. Contact and speed won't be his strong suit, but you may not notice as he racks up 30 home runs a year.
Future Comparison: Danny Kaye
ETA: 2035
Player Potential: A
Organizational Fit: A
Overall Grade: A

13) Minnesota Massacres - Brad Blanche - 1B
One of the most ready to go hitters in the draft ends up in Minnesota. He's not quite ready to for the big time, but he'll demolish left handed pitching when he's ready. Expect a year in the minors and a position change before he's with the big club.
Future Comparison: Sam Shaw
ETA: 2032
Player Potential: B
Organizational Fit: B
Overall Grade: B

14) Seattle Steelheads - Bruno Bokelmann - RP
Winner of this year's Best Name in the First Round competition, BruBo joins a Seattle staff with decent control and a lack of velocity. At this point with this draft, this is a solid pick just as he has a shot to help his club eventually. It's a questionable fit with the Steelheads selecting another pitcher 3rd in this draft.
Future Comparison: Dane Miljus
ETA: 2035
Player Potential: B+
Organizational Fit: C+
Overall Grade: B-

15) Colorado Stegosaurus - Chuck Raggio - 3B
The rich get richer here. The Stegos win the NL crown then pick up a great power bat in Raggio. He may have been passed over for his lack of speed or defensive ability, but there's not doubt he'll rake. At 17 with B- power, he should only fall this far in a deep draft.
Future Comparison: Ralph Sadowski
ETA: 2035
Player Potential: A
Organizational Fit: A
Overall Grade: A

16) Los Angeles Stars - Adam Carolla - CF
Don't blink or you'll miss him. You'll hear that plenty on the radio as Carolla makes the rounds in the minors, but don't expect to see him much on TV in the big leagues. He has A+ speed and bunting, but if allowed to swing he's not likely to do damage. There's not much love for that kind of batting line.
Future Comparison: Bob Prendergast
ETA: 2036
Player Potential: C-
Organizational Fit: C
Overall Grade: C-

Awesome read like always...It was a weak draft.

I love how you find comparison guys that are pretty close for almost everyone.

Hopefully they end up that way. Probably worth taking a look back at my record in a few years.

Crazy draft already. #1 is on the block. #2 was traded. #5 was waived.

I can't believe the Stego's ended up with Raggio - I had him slotted in my top 3.
Have to agree with the assessment of Carolla - with better contact that A+ speed and bunting is a little more interesting.

As always, thanks Kahuna!
