Don Clary would respond in a very positive way to being included in a trade and then have it emphatically rejected by the other team. Clary was offered to the Tampa Bay Storm with starting pitcher Bernie Robitaille (4-1 5.59 ERA) for RHP Chuck Powell (2-3 4.21) and Jack Jones (2-2 4.11) and Tampa Bay very quickly nixed the idea.

Tampa won the first game of the series 4-1. Tampa starter Otto Traber gave up a lead off homer to Stu Schmidt to start the game. It was the 3rd for Schmidt and 5th hit off Traber this season. Traber then shutout the LumberJacks on four hits for the next seven innings leaving with a 4-1 lead in the 9th inning.

Tampa got four runs (three earned) of Jeff Ojeda on just six hits in eight innings to fall to 1-4 3.43 for the season.

Arquimedez Cassidy (3 hits) and John Busby (2 hits) got five of the six hits were the big bats for Tampa.

Traber had a lead off single to center field in the 5th inning. Cassidy followed with a single to left that allowed Traber go to third base. Traber scored on an error by the pitcher, Ojeda's wild throw to second base trying to get Cassidy. Cassidy wound up at third and the batter Darrin Hernandez at second but Busby struck out and Hoffman lined to right to prevent any further scoring.

Tampa Bay lead 3-1.

John Busby triples in the 8th and scored Tampa's fourth run on a ground out.

Lary Kazanski protected that lead for his 5th save.

Game two

Seattle 3 Tampa 0

Don Clary had approximately twenty four hours to mull over the trade results and as mentioned responded in a positive way. He took the mound after his mound opponent, Joey Costo, got out of a first and third jam with no outs (singles by Stu Schmidt and Dick Pettis) by getting Brett VanRobays to pop out to short, striking out Russell Lopez, and catcher Gary Barber threw out Pettis stealing.

Clary got through the first quickly allowing only a two out bunt single to Mike Hoffman.

Clary allowed a base runner in the second, Roger Davis singled but VanRobays threw him out stealing.

Costo retired the next six Seattle batters until two errors cost him a run in the 4th inning.

In that inning Bettis reacehd on an erro by shortstop herman Lewis, stole second and continued to third base on a bad throw into center field by catcher Gary Barber. Bettis scored on a ground ball to third base man Bill Gruber to put Seattle in front 1-0. Seattle scored the run with benefit of a hit.

The collected two hits in the 6th off Costo, a double by Schmidt and a homerun by Van Robays, his 6th and the 8th in 43 innings pitched off Costo.

Seattle assumed a 3-0 lead.

Clary remained strong over the final three innings of his outing. He walked Lewis in the 6th but stranded him. He had a bit of trouble in the 7th when he gave up singles to Barber and Davis, who between them (Barber had two and Davis three) had five of Tampa's ten hits in the game, but Clary got Gruber to fly out to Pettis in right field and Killean to ground out to shortstop Tony Berneir.

Clary got Tampa in order in the 9th to finsish on a good note and Dave Orsatti faced just three batters in the bottom of the ninth to pick up his 9th save.

Clary was the winner 1-2. Costo took the loss 1-2.

Seattle moved into a four way tie for first place with Los Angeles (W2), Baltimore (W1 and Washington (W1) who have 21-17 records after 238 games of the season.
