Detroit gains ground on first place Chicago

Post by basilrathbonejr »

Detroit completed a trade with Minnesota on August 7 sending outfielders Jim Landrum and Kerry Armbrister and starting pitcher Kevin Newman to Minnesota for starting pitcher Al Uhle and outfielder Bruce Byrne (optioned).

That last word went unnoticed by the Tigers front office. Byrne was claimed by two other clubs before it was noticed and room was made for him to be put on the roster.

Detroit owner Basil Rathbone learned of the mistake in an unusual manner. After attending a Broadway play with his wife on her birthday, in New York, he hailed a cab to take him and Mrs. Rathbone back to their hotel. The cabbie one John Rogetti recognized the couple and asked Rathbone why his team would put such a good player on waivers after getting him in a trade. The reaction he got was unforgettable.

Rathbone nearly spit out his teeth and became greatly excited ordering the cabbie to pull over at the next phone booth where he asked the cabbie for change to call his general manager.

Rathbone may have fired the man on the spot had he not been able to safely pull Byrne back from the waiver list. As it stands one New York cabbie was given a substantial tip for his intervention and one general manager is anxiously awaiting his fate back in Detroit which may even be on shakier ground after Byrne went four for five in his first game with the Tigers.

Third straight win for the Tigers and in the Tiger starting pitcher has gone eight innings in one game and the two others went the distance. The Detroit bats have been on fire of late, getting nine runs on fourteen hits in this game. Starting pitcher Octavio (Cookie) Uriba pitched nine innings gave up six hits and two runs walked a few too many (5) and struck out seven.

Detroit took a 1-0 lead in the top of the 3rd off Tommy Bedrosian (LP1-5).

Don Jatkowsky bunted for a base hit. After catcher Allen Kreevich struck out, Uribe bunted the runner to second with two outs. Newly acquired Bruce Bryne singled in the run.

The Tigers added another run in the 4th inning. Rex Barrett singled to center field with one out, stole second as Thompson struck out. Pete Whitehurst singled in run number two.

Toronto tied the game 2-2 in the bottom of the 4th on a two out double by Fred Crabtree.

Jim Thompson's grand slam homerun in the top of the 5th gave Detroit a commanding 6-2 lead. It was Thompson's eighth of the season giving him the lead in the homerun derby and 25 runs batted in ties him with two others for the league lead.

Bruce Byrne however was not done.

Byrne singled to right field to start the 7th and stole second. Jake Egan, getting a start at shortstop, singled past diving third baseman Danny Mooty sending Byrne to 3b. Barrett doubled home Byrne. 7-2
