Tigers 5 White Sox 3

(10 innings)

The Detroit Tigers piled on to the continuing troubles of the first place Sox with a 5-3 win in ten innings. The White Sox have now lost seven of their last ten games which has allowed Detroit, winners of only six of their last ten games to move to within one game of catching the league leaders.

The game was a back and forth tight game from beginning to end.

The end came in the bottom of the tenth inning when Jake Egan singled with one out off reliever Wiley Dillon and Whitey Getz hit a game winning walk off homerun to bring the game to an end.

Both teams are now 2-2 in extra innings.

The road to that exciting finish had many bumps and turns along the way as the two teams battled tooth and nail every inning.

The White Sox got off to a roaring start when the first two batters in the top of the first inning, Doc Royer (3rd) and Ricardo Henry (8th) hit homeruns off Dick Stephenson for an ultra quick 2-0 lead.

The White Sox starter, Thad Cabell, could not escape the inning unscathed either. The Tigers Lead-off batter Bruce Byrne tripled on the right field wall. Jim Thompson's two out singled get him in to score the first Tiger run..2-1 Chicago.

The Tigers got the game all even in the bottom of the 4th inning. Cabell walked lead off batter Pete Whitehurst. Whitehurst stole second base as Tom Lynch struck out, went to third base on a ground out to first by George Brohamer, and then scored the tying run on a single to left by Dan Merriman.

Chicago retook the lead in the top of the 5th inning 3-2. Lynch threw out Doc Royer, who singled, attempting to steal second base (2-6). Ricardo Henry followed with another single and did manage to steal second base. Stan Cabrera's single drove him in with the go-ahead run.

Detroit scored the tying run in the bottom of the 9th inning to send it into extra innings off relief pitcher Si Chervinko.

Chervinko robbed Lynch of a hot with a desperate stab of a shot back to the mound for the first out. George Brohamer lined a double into the left field gap to put the tying run in scoring position. Chervinko got the second out of the inning, a grounder to short by Jatkowsky.

Pinch hitter Billy Cole got the biggest hit of the game to that point, a pinch hit game tying single.

John Ewing pitched a scoreless top of the tenth and would get the win (3-1) when Getz homered.

Final 5-3 Detroit.

Extra innings were the special order of the day in the American League and this one went 15 innings.

The winning pitcher was Willie Servais, the sixth pitcher used by the Scotsmen in the game. The Scotsmen won the game due to the efforts of its bullpen. Minnesota starting pitcher Harvey Veryzer went seven and two thirds inning allowed eight hits two runs (both earned) issued no walks and had six strikeouts.

Joe Merson (two scoreless innings) and Dave Montanez three scoreless innings bridge a long gap between the game being tied and Jack Tillman's game winning hit after Dan Dwyer walked two batters with two outs in the bottom of the 15th inning.

Jerrod Blek hit a two run homerun off Toronto starter Jack Drahman in the 3rd inning to stake Minnesota to an early 2-0 lead.

That lead was cut in half in the 4th inning on a pair of doubles by Todd Alba and Denny Adcock.

Minnesota stretch the lead back to two runs (3-1) in the bottom of the 4th inning.
