White Sox - Tigers series game summeries

Post by basilrathbonejr »

Fans have turned out in droves to see the battle between the top two teams in the American League before game two a section in the stands put up a sign that read; ''Tigers check the waiver wires; Entire pitching staff on it!'' in reference to the blunder that almost cost theTigers half of what the were given in their recent trade with Minnesota.

General manager Sylvester Merkle, the Detroit General manager, is a long time baseball man who is the grandson of Fred ''Bonehead'' Merkle who failed to touch second base on a single that cost the Giants the 1908 pennant.

Merkle ordered the sign removed and when the fans protested they were told they would also be gone (all of them in that section) if they persisted. The sat down and were quite.

The White Sox came back after losing game one to take the second game 10-4 to end their losing streak and put then two games ahead of Detroit and red hot Minnesota who once again defeated Toronto for their second straight win.

The Sox blasted Detroit 10-4 behind the complete game efforts of Tom Timmerman who allowed six hits and four runs (three earned) walked five and struck out four. Timmerman is now 4-2 on the season.

Jimmy Gremp put the White Sox in front with a run scoring double in the second inning.

In the 4th inning walked to start the inning, advanced to second on a ground out to first by Bill Sweeney, and then was able to score on a single to right by Art Butler.

2-0 Chicago.

Chip Magrann hit his 6th homerun of the season with Butcher aboard (double).

4-0 Chicago.

In the 8th inning Chicago put up four runs to take complete command of the game when Magrann hit a grand slam homeru, his second of the game and 7th of the season. 8-0 Chicago.

Detroit scored four cosmetic runs in the top of the 9th to make the score a bit closer but nothing else. One of the runs was unearned due to an error.

Final score; Chicago 10-4.

Tigers 8 White Sox 4

Al Uhle, ''the other guy'' in the trade that fetched Bruce Byrne from Minnesota for three players, made his Detroit debut and it was a success. Uhle went eight innings allowed seven hits and four runs (three earned) gave up one base on balls and struck out five.

Rick Martinez pitched the 9th inning w/ one strikeout...no save.

Tony Loynd (1-3) the second of four pitchers used by Chicago took the loss.

Detroit began the scoring in the bottom of the second inning wearing out right field with three singles in that direction; Don Jatkowsky and Jim Thompson singled to right field. Whitehurst struck out..one out. Ricardo Wilson sent another hit out into right field scoring Jatkowsky.

1-0 Detroit.

Chicago was not intimidated and made a comeback in the top of the 4th. Royer singled to right field. Livingstone forced him at second..one out. Bill Sweeney reached on an error by center fielder Ricardo Wilson. (Livingstone scored) Cabrera scored on a ground out by Tillie Hawkins.

2-1 Chicago.

The Tigers took a 4-0 lead in the 5th inning. Whitehurst walked and stole second. Wilson grounded to third base. Uhle lined back to the mound. Blly Cole singled in Whitehurst. George Brohamer added another single, stole second and scored on catcher Tom Lynch's single with two outs.

4-2 Detroit.

Chicago chipped away at that lead scoring a run in the 6th inning on singles by Dave Livingstone and Cabrera and Doc Royer tied it in the 7th with a solo homerun.

Detroit was not done for either and they took pitcher Tony Loynd to task in the 7th. Ricardo Wilson walked to start the inning but was caught stealing (catcher Pete Breeden to second baseman Chip Magrann). Picher Al Uhle grounded to third where Tillie Hawkins made a fantastic diving stop and threw out the pitcher at first.

Pinch hitter Jake Egan hit a homerun. Loynd walked Brohamer and Lynch singled Brohamer to third. Lynch stole second putting runners on second and third for Rex Barrett to drive in with a clutch single.

7-4 Detroit and the Tigers added a run in the 8th for a 8-4 final score.

The Tigers took the series two games to one.
