Detroit 8 Chicago 7

Detroit came from behind to defeat first place Chicago at Baines Barn in Chicago to give the Tigers their fourth win against the league leaders in seven games this season. The win moved the surging Tigers to within four games of Chicago with two games remaining in this series.

Detroit has won eight of their last ten games and have a four game winning streak.

Danny Selby stated for Detroit but did not last very long; 4 IP 7H 5R (earned).

Detroit took the initial lead in the 3rd inning. Selby, the pitcher had a two out single. Ricardo Wilson followed with a single to leftfield. Jake Edan doubled in both runners 2-0 Detroit.

Egan, a shortstop by trade, has started twelve times at first base and twice at shortstop over the last 14 games and batted .375 (21 for 56 with four doubles, two homeruns and 12 runbs batted in. To force himself into the lineup.

Chicago scored five of their seven runs in the fourth inning off Selby on five hits and two walks (both scored). Stan Cabrera singled off Egan's glove at first. Sweeney walked. Art Butcher singled to center field to load the bases. Chip Magrann walked to force in a run (Cabrera). Jimmy Gremp singled to center field driving in Sweeney and Butcher. Veil's infield single off the shortstop Matt Wise's glove scored Magrann, Timmerman's attempted sacrifice bunt forced Gremp at third base. Doc Royer singled in Veil for the final run scored in the inning.

Detroit came right back with two big runs in the 5th inning.

Jim Thompson singled to right field but was caught stealing. Matt Wise singled to right field. Rex Barrett pinch hitting for Selby lined out to Magrann at second. Ricardo Wilson reached on an error by Magrann. Egan doubled to right center field scoring Wise and Wilson.

5-4 Chicago.

Rance Haberer made his major league debut in the 5th and gave up a run on two hits, a one out single by Art Butcher who stole second, and a run scoring single ) by Magrann.

Detroit scored one in the top of the 6th to close it to 6-5. George Brohamer singled with one out and stole second with two outs before Don Jatkowsky singled him in.

Detroit took the lead for the first time in the 7th with three runs on two hits. Pete Whitehurst walked and struck out as Wilson struck out. Egan bounced to third for the second out. Brohamer came through with a two out run scoring single to right scoring Whitehurst. Timmerman (6.2 IP 10 H 7R) Tony Loynd came in and gave up a two run homer to Dan Merriman (6th) to put Detroit ahead 8-6.

John Ewing gave up a run to Chicago in the 7th. Doubles by Gremp and Veil produced the final Chicago run.

Paul Buschhorn pitched two scoreless innings for his 7th save.

Final 8-7 Detroit.
