Detroit has had a magic wand in the later innings showing an innate ability to come back late innings to win. The home team scored a run on two hits and two walks off Dick Stephenson in the first inning. Doc Royer singled to right field. Stan Cabrera walked with one out and Art Butcher walked with two outs. Chip Magrann singled in Royer.

Beat pitchers settled I n and the defense excelled without any further scoring until the ninth inning.

Detroit third baseman Jim Thompson robbed Pete Breedon of a hit in the 2nd inning.

Thompson in turn was victimized by left fielder Ricardo Henry in the 4th inning.

Thompson committed an error in the 5th and Cabrera singled but Stephen fanned Cabrera and got Sweeney to pop out.

Thompson hit his 12th homer with one on (Tom Lynch) to put Detroit ahead 2-1 in the 9th inning.

The win was Detroit's 5th straight, 8th in last 20 games.

Haberer just called up pitched two scoreless innings for the win.
