Tigers sweep rudderless Oakland

Post by basilrathbonejr »

Detroit has made good use out of several rookies, pitchers Pat Yoter (1-0 1.59) Allen Horton (0-0 3.18), outfielder Earl Raymer (.231), and pitcher Hobie Connatser will get the start the next time the 5th starters spot comes up. Detroit traded a very talented rookie Rance Haberer to Kansas City for reliever George Bigbee who has but for his last outing been very good.

The Tigers picked up a game on first place Chicago who were bombed 11-1 by Kansas City.

Yoter went 5.2 innings in the series final against Oakland giving up just one run on seven hits understandably was a little nervous in the beginning walking four and recorded three strikeouts.

The two teams were tied 1-1 going into the 6th inning when Detroit took charge. George Brohamer hit the first of two homeruns (his 6th) in the game with two outs and Tom Lynch (single) aboard.

In the bottom of the 6th Oakland got to the rookie starter. Yoter gave up singles to Clarence Harris who was erased when Jim Thompson started a 5-4-3 DP. Almost out of the inning, but not quite. Bob Salmon and Paddy Williams singled with two outs bringing in Johnny Allen who got Wertz, who batted for himself, to ground out to shortstop Rex Barrett.
Detroit maintained its 3-1 lead.

The Tigers turned to their bench in the 7th sending up pinch hitter Don Jatkowsky who drew a lead off walk from Wertz. Pinch hitter Ricardo Wilson forced him at second for the first out. Bruce Byrne double to left field scoring Wilson. Oakland brought in former Negro league star Red Bridewieser who struck out both Raymer and Egan to end the inning.

Detroit added on thee runs that only gained value as the game progressed. Jim Thompson beat out a little dribbler to third base. Lynch was walked in front of Brohamer who slugged his second homerun of the game (7th) giving him five runs batted in in the game and Detroit a seemingly very comfortable 7-1 lead.

George Bigbee was roughed up handily in the one third of an inning he worked to the tune of four runs on four hits. A sacrifice fly by Paddy Williams gone one run in and a three run homerun by pinch hitter Ray Ray drove in three more making the score 7-5.

Paul Buschhorn got the final two outs of the 8th and all three in the 9th for his 12th save.
