11 Innings

The Tigers have rebounded from a team wide slump that dropped them into fourth place and barely contending to pull within two games of first place Chicago and two ahead of third place Minnesota. Chicago lost to Seattle 4-2 and Minnesota dropped their game with Kansas City 4-2 allowing Detroit to pick up a game on both.

Detroit took a 3-0 lead in the 4th inning off New York starting pitcher Bob Baker. George Brohamer tripled and scored on a single by Tom Lynch. Don Jatkowsky hit a two run homerun with one out.

The Tigers added onto their lead in the 6th inning. Whitey Getz singled to right field, Brohamer singled to left sending the runner to third where Getz scored on a sacrifice fly by Tom Lynch. 4-0 Detroit.

Danny Selby had led the Union to just one hit over the first seven inning. but he ran into a peck of trouble in that inning. Ted Houck singled to start the inning. Ernie Farrell doubled to left field and Darin Vizcaino hit a three run homerun. The long inning continued as Joe Duffie singled to center field. After Aaron flied to left and Waterbury struck out Johnny Walkup doubled to center field to tie the game. John Ewing came in to pitch but he surrendered a two run homer to pinch hitter Jimmy Iott.

6-4 New York after 6 innings.

Detroit came back to tie the game 6-6 in the 8th inning.

Whitey Getz singled with two outs. Brohamer bunted for a hit and Tom Lynch doubled in two runs off Cuckoo Fuentes bring in Gary Smith.

A control issue forced Allen Horton to work a long tense 9th inning. Horton walked Johnny Walkup with one out. Walkup stole second. Pitcher Gary Smith and then John Howell with two outs. Ernie Farrell flied harmlessly to Jatkowsky in left to end the threat leaving the bases loaded.

Detroit got a two out double by Dan Merriman in the 9th but he too was left on base.

Paul Buschhorn worked a scoreless 1.2 innings to pick up the win (3-4) when Don Jatkowsky hit his second homer (9th of season) with two on via singles ( Lynch and Thompson.
