Heiser NO HITS DETROIT!

Post by basilrathbonejr »

Manny Heiser threw several no hitters growing up and two in the minors but the no hit effort he had against Detroit was his first in the major leagues. The thirty year old right hander from the Bronx, New York improved to 7-5 on the season and recorded 11 strikeout in his gem.

The only base runner for Detroit was Dan Merriman who walked with two out in the second inning. Heiser struck out Jake Egan, George Brohamer, and Rex Barrett twice, Lynch, Thompson, Byrne, Stephenson, and Whitehurst all went down once.

The typical no hitter has a play or two that saved the day but this one did not. New York scored all three of its runs with two outs in the 3rd inning when Ted Houck singled and Dick Stephenson walked Ernie Farrell bringing up Darin Vizcaino who sent his 10th homer deep into the night.

After the game Heiser was jubilant, ''We're not having that good a season,'' he said, ''And they are contending, so it feels real good to be a part of the pennant race.''

Ernie Farrell, the catcher, said that Heister had supreme command on all his pitches, Farrell indicated that the walk to Merriman was the only lapse in control the big right hander had during the game. ''He should have been on it more than he was there, but hey one walk in a no hitter ain't that bad.''
