White Sox - Tigers begin big series

Post by basilrathbonejr »

Detroit 4 Chicago 0

With six games remaining in the regular season Detroit is hosting Chicago for a pivotal series with major pennant implications. The White Sox led Detroit by three games going in. The Tigers are counting on their league leading homerun hitter Jim Thompson (18) to hit a couple in this series.

The ace of the Tiger pitching staff, Dick Stephenson shut out the White Sox on five hits to go 7-2 and lower his ERA to a league best 2.34. Stephenson recorded six strikeouts and issued four walks over his nine innings but it was not easily done because the Sox had chances to score throughout the game.

Chicago ace had Cabell started the game for the visitors looking fir his 10th win of the season.

The Tiger right hander set the side down in order only twice, in the first and seventh innings, and in that seventh inning he needed a great play by his shortstop Rex Barrett to rob Pete Breeden of a hit.

The White Sox left seven runners on base in the game and ran themselves out of one possible run in the second inning. Stephenson walked Art Butcher who was caught stealing by catcher Tom Lynch for the second out. Jay Konopka tripled and he was left on when Joe Clark grounded harmlessly to first baseman Jake Egan.

Chicago left two on in the third. Pete Breeden singled advanced to second on pitcher Thad Cabell's sacrifice bunt. Royer flied to right for out number two. Ricardo Henry walked on a border line fourth ball but Stan Cabrera was then called out on a borderline fastball that prompted some screaming from the White Sox dugout to alas, no avail.

Kopopka singled with two outs in the fourth and stole second, Joe Clark left him on base with a easy bouncer to Egan at first.

Chicago put two on in the fifth inning, Breeden with a lead off single. Pitcher Thad Cabell bunted back to the pitcher. Stephenson throw to third forced Breeden. Cabell caught the Tigers unaware and stole second. Royer then flied to right and Henry fanned.

The Sox could do nothing with Butcher's sixth inning double and ninth inning single.

Detroit capitalized on two scoring chances in the game scoring in the second when Bruce Byrne triple of Cabell with one out and scored on a sacrifice fly by Don Jatkowsky for a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth that put three runs on the scoreboard. Jim Thompson doubled with one out advanced to third on the second out a ground out to first by Byrne and came in to score on Jatkowsky's clutch single to right. Rex Barrett hit a two rrun homerun, his 7th, to make the final score 4-0.

Cabell went six innings gave up six hits and four runs to take the loss (9-2) Tony Loynd pitched two scoreless innings issuing two walks and striking out two.
