Coverage of the Bobby Bragan League.

Our woeful Boston Braves have been sputtering along under the maladroit guise of manager Casey Trinkle. Going into a three game home series with third place Minnesota. The Braves have bungled their way to a 9-21 record going into this series. Trinkle recently said of his team that ''managing is getting paid for homeruns somebody else hits and we are not hitting many so I don't expect to get paid all that much longer.''

Ask if he was expecting to be fired anytime soon, he replied. ''Well I don't expect them to throw a parade for me unless its a convoy of taxi's lined up behind me to run me out of town. You know the nominated the cab driver who hit me last season for ''Sports Man of the Year.''

The Braves opened a three game series with Minnesota with a eleven game losing streak hanging like an great big anchor over the heads of the manager and the team. The choice to start game one went to left hander Dwight Alvarez, 1-4 this season. Alvarez' mound opponent was right hander Jake Spinks (2-1).

Alvarez allow a walk and a single in the first inning but escaped with no runs scored with help from his catcher Steve Riccelli
throwing out Dick Stanton and getting Ed Palm to pop out to short.

Boston got to Spinks for two runs in the first inning. Left fielder John Snyder singled with one out and stole second (1st). Snyder scored on Marc-Andre Rappalvich triple and he in turn came in on Ralph Albertson's ground out.

Boston tallied again in the 3rd inning. With one out Snyder singled but was erased on a grounder to second by Rappalvich. Albertson doubled him in. Alex Perry followed with a run scoring single. Spinks hit Vance Mallancourt with a pitch and then walked Lynn Epps to load the bases before getting out of the inning by striking out Riccelli.

4-0 Boston.

Minnesota scored two runs in the 9th inning to break up the shutout. Gordy Smith singled and Alvarez hit Warren Sorrell with a pitch.

The Braves made a pitching change bringing in Bill Lilly. Lilly got the first two batters he faced but then ran into some trouble. With two outs He walked Dick Stanton to load the bases. Earl Grahe singled in two runs with a single to right. Ed Palm made the final out grounding out to shortstop Pat Lavan.

Alvarez went 8+ two batters gave 7 hits 2 runs 2 earned runs 4 walks 3 strikeouts ....2-4.

Lilly 1 IP 1 Hit 1 BB ...First save....

Game two....

Boston 3 Minnesota 2

Both starting pitcher pitched well in game two. Minnesota's starter Ralph Burnitz went six innings allowed four hits and one run walked three and recorded five strikeouts. Tim Damrau lasted seven and one third innings giving up six hits and one run (earned) two walks and six strikeouts.

The game was scoreless going into the bottom of the sixth when Ralph Albertson tripled with no outs and then scored on a one out sacrifice fly hit by Vance Mallancourt.

Minnesota struck for two runs in the 8th inning. Damrau started the inning and recorded one out before giving up a single to Cal Gomez. Ed Palm hit a two run homerun off reliever Pete Bowers (BS)...one of those runs was charged to Damrau (Gomez).

2-1 Minnesota

Boston uncharacteristically came right back to take the lead 3-2 when Vance Mallancourt hit a two run homerun. Alex Perry who had singled scored ahead of him.

Bill Lilly, the new closer, came in for the 9th inning and recorded his second save.

Third game

Braves 5 Minnesota 4

A nearly full house came out to Braves Field to watched their last place Braves go for their second sweep of the season. The first came earlier this season over Tampa Bay (July 11th, 12th, 13th).

Ken Ramsey went eight innings was charged with three runs (two earned) walked two struck out five. Pete Bowers had a rocky ninth getting tagged for one run on three his but held onto the lead in the end for his third save.

Boston took charge in the first inning. Marc-Andre Raffalvich doubled in Pat Lavan with the first run.

The Braves added three more runs in the second inning on John Snyder's three run homer, his third of the season.

The Braves lead 4-0.

Minnesota began chipping away at the lead. In the fourth inning Kevin Alfonso doubled in a run, Benny Delsing singled in Minnesota's second run in the sixth and Red Pappas drove in one run in with a double in the 7th to close to within one run; 4-3.

Boston got an insurance run in the 8th on a single when Ralph Albertson singled stole second and came in to score on Pat Lavan's second hit of the game to make the score 5-3.

Bowers survived the ninth for his 3rd save and the Braves had a sweep.

When reporters went looking for Trinkle he had left word to tell them he was getting embalmed (code for he was celebrating with a few beers at the corner bar.)
