The Tampa Bay BeachCombers took the rubber game of a three game series with Chicago to even their record at 3-3.

Wayne Vaughn (1-1) went eight innings gave up six hits and thee runs, all earned, walked three and struck out three to best Eddie McCall (0-1).

Will Robinson, in his last appearance for Tampa, pitched the ninth inning in a non-save situation. Robinson gave up one hit and struck out two before learning he had been traded to Philadelphia along with Tampa's first round draft pick for outfielder Phil Rasmaussen and Chicago's second round draft pick.

Both teams scored a run in the first inning.

The BeachCombers took advantage of some shaky defense by Chicago. Greg Whaley had a one out single past shortstop Fred Maurer. Whaley advanced to second base on a passed ball charged to Chicago catcher Fritz Ellis and scored on a two out RBI double by Matt Hegeman.


Vaughn walked the lead off batter, Tom Fear, in the Chicago half of the inning. Fear then stole second base and came in to score on a single by Maurer.

Another error in the 3rd inning enabled Tampa to score four un-earned runs. Pitcher Wayne Vaughn led off the inning with a single to right field.Eddie McCall walked Craig Thomas and Matt Hegeman reached on a two out error on center fielder Tom Fear. Vaughn scored on the error. The next batter Alois Steenberger made the defensive miscue hurt even worse with his 2nd homerun of the season bringing in three runs and putting Tampa in front 5-1.

Tampa added two more runs in the fourth inning. McCall issued another walk that came back to haunt him to catcher John Swormstadt. Vaughn's sac-bunt advanced the catcher to second base and Thomas singled driving him in to score. Thomas stole second and socred on a two out single by Whaley.7-1 Tampa Bay.

Chicago scored two consulation runs in the 9th when Greg Tunnell hit a two run homer.
