Why take a reliever with the #1 pick?
Wally Coleman more than paid off as the overall #1 pick almost 20 seasons ago
Has pitched in more games than anyone ever in this league (1695 games and counting) while missing over 1 full season with injuries.
14 all star teams
cy young winner as a reliever
150 wins (as a reliever) and 300 saves
5 playoffs
1 world series win

A true workhorse

In other news: Shag reaches 2 milestones with 1 swing

I traded for him 21 seasons ago and he hit his 400th homer and collected his 1500th RBI this season.

That was a great year to have the #1 pick. Only nine players even made a single all-star team from that draft.

interestingly of the nine that made the AS team, the first six picks all made at least one...then you have to skip to pick 12, then pick 32, then pick 57..the great Irish Jacobs from Milwaukee. Rare for a 4th rounder to have success.
