MINNESOTA 5 OAKLAND 3

The Minnesota Moonshiners have hit a league high .275 this season while the pitching staff has been manhandled at times and has a,416 Staff ERA which prompted some changes of late. Right hander Alex Handrahan was recalled from the minors and place in the starting rotation.

Handrahan was 0-2 last season, lost his spot in the rotation early last season and spent most of the season in AAA. Knowing that there might not be any third chances the twentry seven year old right hander from Newark, New Jersey, took the mound to face the Oakland Gatekeepers in game one of a very important three game series between two of the top four contending teams.

Handrahan went eight impressive innings giving up three runs on eight hits walked one and struck out four.

Handrahan was opposed very capably by right hander Gerry Little for Oakland who went seven innings allowed three runs on nine hits walked three and struck out eight.

There was no scoring through the first four innings by either club. Little allowed three hits, one walk and recorded three of his eight strikeout over thoise innings and Handrahan held Oakland to just one hit and one walk and pitched around an error by second baseman Mike Straub in the secoind inning.

The games offense picked up substantially after the fourth inning, however. Minnesota scored two runs in the inning. Little walked the lead off batter in the injning, shortstop Don Allison. Handrahan put down a succesful sacrifice bunt .. retired 5-4 for the first out. Keith Smith gounded out to second base. Amos Strueli doubled in the first rn and he socred on a single by Floyd Izqueirdo before Ribrant struck out to end the inning.

2-0 Minnesota.

Oakland rallied immediately to cut that lead in half. Eddie Gilmore beat up a Baltimore chop to the pitcher for a single. Gus Graham advanced the runner with a ground out to first and Gilmore socored on a grund ball single to centerfield by Johnny Hamelin.

2-1 Minnesota.

Pinch hitter George Gonzalez made his last appearance with the Moonlighters before being traded to Arizona a good one with a single. Gonzalez stole second base and went over to third base on a throwing error charged to catcher Gus Graham when no one covered the bag Gonzalez came in to score on a sacrifce fly by pitcher Alex Handrahan, Handrahan's second successful sacrifice hit of the game.

3-1 Minnesota.

Oakland came back to tie the game 3-3 in the seventh inning. Gilmore doubled to left field. Ullger walked and Graham atoned for his error with a run scoring single. Ullger went to third base on the play. Hamelin followed with single driving in Ullger to tie the game but right fielder Keith Smith threw out Graham at third base for the first out of the inning. The defensive play of the game kepot the game tied because Handrahanstruck out pinch hitter Bill Foss and got Howard Konitz to ground out to sccond baseman Mike Straub.

Minnesota scored the go ahead runs in the top of the eighth inning when Straub singled and pinch hitter Damon VCarey hit his thrid homerun of hte season and third career pinch hit homerun to provide the inning margin.

Jack Suarez came in in the ninth inning to nail down the win and his seventh save.

FINAL 4-2 Minnesota.
