Lebebvre League Baseball Recaps

Post by larrysiegfried20 »

There is an excellent pennant race going on in the American League. Two teams are tied for first place in the Junior Circuit after the last action on August 12, 1950.

WASHINGTON 3 TAMPA BAY 0

(10 INNINGS)

Washington is now 4-1 in extra innings. John Mueller, 4-0 for the season, has come out of the bullpen to win three of those games.

Tampa Bay fell to 2-4, and have lost their last two games in extra innings. They were shutout in both games and have been shutout in three of their last four games, scoring only five runs in a 5-4 win over Toronto.

Washington's starting pitcher, Larry Milne went 8.1 shutout innings allowing seven hits and walking two with seven strikeouts.

Mueller replaced Milne with one out in the ninth inning after Kurt Pocoroba doubled off the base of the center field wall off Milne. Mueller retired Bill Carroll on a fly out to rightfielder Stan Littlefield and got Wayne Branston on a sharply hit liner to second baseman Tom Bergman.

Good defense by both teams had helped in keeping the game scoreless for the first nine innings. A great defensive play in rightfield by Mike McCauley robbed Bob Sasser of an extra base hit . The blue star paly shined even brighter after the next batter, John Manual, tripled off Dick Renko.

That was all for Renko. His replacement, Clint Foster, did not fare very well either.

Foster gave up a run scoring single to Effie Maxcy that scored Manual.

1-0 Washington.

Tom Bergman followed with a double to right field to put runners on second and third. Spec Guzman pinch hit for Mueller and grounded out to third baseman Bruno Whillick. Maxcy scored on the play. Bergman advanced to third base with two outs.

2-0 Washington.

Kevin Bartly's double made it 3-0.

Goody Roberts (0-1 3.72) sealed the deal in the bottom of the 10th for Washington picking up his 6th save of the season.

DETROIT 9 TORONTO 4

Detroit pounded Toronto pitching for nine runs on eight hits knocking out Toronto starting pitcher Rick Mack after four innings. Mack allowed four hits, five runs (four earned) walked four and struck out one.

Walks and some poor defense contributed to Mack's downfall in the third inning.

Mack walked the first batter, Tom Webster, struck out the next hitter, Ken Hughes. A two base-throwing error by third baseman Billy Aybar put runners on second and third with one out. Mack walked the next two batters forcing in the first run. A passed ball on catcher Dick Hooton allowed a second run to score and the third run came in on a ground out by Bradley.

Tom Webster's sacrifice fly added a run in the fourth inning. 4-0 Detroit. Webster added a two run homer, his first of the season in the 5th inning.

Johnny Bowers (5th two runs) and Gerald Jiminez (1st) homered for Detroit in the 6th.

9-4 FINAL

MINNESOTA 5 OAKLAND 4

Minnesota fans have been very happy with their team in recent days. New owners added to the fanfare by refurbishing of their ballpark making it more fan friendly and re-naming the park, Moonlight Stadium, ( place where dreams come true)…

Minnesota has won five straight and nine of their last fifteen improving to 18-16, six games behind the co-leaders.

Hitting has been a strength of the team. The team batting average is .271 which ranks third. Minnesota is fourth in OPS, and Slugging.

The team ERA of 3.97 ranks 7th in the league and its 268 strikeouts ranks first.

Problematic is the fact that the pitchers have walked 120 batters and the defense has committed 29 errors (,977 F/Pct) has allowed 14 unearned runs. And that needs to improve.

MINNESOTA 5 OAKLAND O's 4

Good numbers/bad number, in reality the team has still won five straight and has been player better for an extended period of time. The fifth straight victory came at the expense of Oakland, 5-4.

Starting pitcher Scott Hernendez (2-2) recorded a season high fifteen strikeouts over seven innings giving him 55 in 56.1 innings pitched, the second best total in the league behind Washington's Snake Duncan's 63 in 64 innings pitched. Sadly Hernandez did not figure in the final decision.

Hernandez allowed four runs on five hits. Opponants are batting just .217 off him (43 for 198 w/3 homeruns allowed.

Things did not gt off to a great start for Hernandez or Minnesota in this game. Oakland put three runs on the scoreboard in the first inning on a three run homerun by Eric Kasanski, his 3rd of the year.

Hernandez started a one out rally in the bottom of the 3rd inning with a single to right field off Oakland starting pitcher Ron McRae. Shortstop Ben Wilson followed that hit with a line drive single to center filed that allowed Hernandez, a good base runner, to advance to third base. McRae walked the next batter Mack Webb to load the bases with one out.

Keith Smith, batting .411 with two homeruns and 13 runs batted in, singled to left field driving in Hernandez and Wilson. Webb stopped at third base.

Smith stole second putting runners on second and third. Both runners scored on a single by Mike Straub puting Minnesota in front v4-3left after seven innings and was deprived of the win when Oakland rallied in the 8th inning on a single past diving second baseman Mike Straub by Eric Kasanski, who homered earlier, followed by a RBI double to right field by Johnny Hamelin.

Jack Fitzke came in to retire three straight batters to get out of the inning tied 4-4,

Mike Straub put Minnesota in front to stay with his 2nd homer of the season, off losing pitcher Chip Keifer. it was the 5th hit off Keifer (0-2) in just 24 innings pitched.

Jack Fitzke got the win to go 3-0 out of the bullpen and Jack Saurez picked up his first save of the season in his debut as the team's closer.
