10 Innings

Toronto (30-15) paid a visit to Minnesota (24-21) to take on the slumping Moonlighters in an important series for both teams. Toronto is in a battle with Washington for first place.

The three game series turned out to be as exciting as a series can be with all three games having its own flavor.
Game one went to Toronto 6-5 in 10 innings. Minnesota is now 4-2 in extra innings. Minnesota has not fared well in extra inning games fell to 1-4 for the season.

Minnesota took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning on a pair of homeruns by Brad Ward with one on, his 7th and a solo shot by CF Chuck Trillo. It was Trillo's first of the season.

Pitcher Scott Hernandez lead-off the 7th inning with a single to leftfield. Frank Izquierdo pinch hit for Goose Weeden and singled past second baseman VanRobays. Hernandez advanced to third base. Izquierdo stole second base, Hernandez scored on a one out ground out by Keith Smith to make the score 4-3 Minnesota.

Anthony Ribant's send homerun of the season added on a run for the Moonlighters in the 8th inning.

Recently when Minnesota scored to take a late lead it has been game over. Not this time! Possibly the workload, or the law of averages, caught up with Minnesota's bullpen that had given up only two earned runs in their last 23.1 innings. Closer Jack Saurez had led the parade being perfect in his five save opportunities.

Saurez in for save number six struck out the lead off batter Mike Redmond. Fred Holt looped a soft fly into short right filed that fell in for a single to start a scoring rally. Hernandez walked Tony Sullivan. Dick Hooton forced Sullivan at second. Holt advanced to third base and scored on pinch hitter Darryl Pena's double to leftfield scoring both Holt and Hooton tying the game 5-5.

That was the first blown save for Saurez, 6th for the team. (14-6).

Toronto scored the game in the 10th off Jack Fritzke. Fritzke walked Van Robays to start the inning. Cozart singled to right field. Van Robays advanced to third base with no outs. Joe Powell popped out to second. Mike Redmond singled to left field driving in Van Robays. holt drew the second walk of the inning but Tony Sullivan grounded into an inning ending double play started y shortstop Don Allison.
