Minnesota and Detroit began a series at Moonlight Park. Detroit came in 18-27 -13 after having won two of three from Tampa Bay to conclude a 6-2 homestand.

Glenn Halladay started game one of the series in Minnesota and Dan Charles was on the mound for the home team.
Detroit had four hits over the first four innings and Minnesota scattered three but the game remaijed scoreless until the top of the fifth inning when Detroit broke the scoring ice with two hits, a one out single by Steve Hinkle and a two out double by Monte Ganley that scored Hinkle on a close play at home,

Trialing 1-0 going into the bottom of the fifth the Minnesota bats got going by collecting four hits and a walk scoring four runs to take va 4-1 lead. Catcher Amos Strueli singled with one out.

Pitcher Dan Charles bunted the runner to second.

Chuck Trillo singled to right field driving in the first run (Strueli) to tie the game 1-1.

Left fielder Floyd Izqueirdo singlled to right filed. Kieth Smith walked to load the bases with two outs. Third baseman Anthony Ribrant's single to left scoring both Trillo and Izqueirdo. (3-1)

Mike Straub's base hit to centerfield was the final run of the inning that left the score at 4-1 Minnesota. Ken Planeta took over the pitching and got the final two outs of the inning for Detroit.

Detroit got rid of Charles in the top of the sixth. Charles labored with long counts in the inning getting Simmy Alvarez to pop out, and got a called third strike on Ken Hughes after a long and tense 11 pitch at bat. The next batter singled on a 2-2 pitch and that was all for Charles. Lefthander Dutch Paynter came in to face Steve Pfyl and got him to pop out in fair territory to third baseman Anthony Ribrant.

Minnesota added two runs in the sixth inning off Carl Montague. Allison struck out, Montague walked Strueli who stole second (5th). Veteran lefthander Dutch Paynter (1.0IP 2H 1R/1ER 1BB/1SO) batted for himself and singled driving in Strueli. Payntor is now 1 for 3 in 20 games on the season.

Carl Meyer came in to pitch for Detroit. Trillo struck out, but Izquierdo reached on an error by first baseman Tom Milliniks. Keith Smith singled past second baseman Simmy Alvarado. Ribrant followed with his second of three hits of the game driving in Paynter.

6-1 Minnesota.

Steve Hinkle singled, Johnny Bowers walked Monte Ganley grounded into a 6-4-3 double play. Huck Alvis singled in Hinkle. 6-2 Minnesota.

Minnesota scored two runs in the 7th and two more in the eighth and Detroit scored a run in the 9th for a 10-3 final.
