Game two; Minnesota 8 Washington 5

Post by larrysiegfried20 »

The Moonlighters continue to be a bad dream for the American League contenders, Washington and Toronto. After losing seven straight to Toronto, won the final two games of their last series and they are now 5-3 against Toronto, 4-1 and along with some scorching of the other AL clubs have improved to 28-21.

The Moonlighters waited 31 games before going over .500 for good and it took a six game winning streak from August 7th (game 30) through August 14th to get the job done.

Now with the first place club winning their last game 4-2 over Kansas City to even that series, the only gain Minnesota could get was to defeat second place Washington and they did just that.

Dan Charles having a great season for Minnesota improved to 7-3 with a 3.72 ERA by going seven innings giving up four hits and two runs (earned) walking one and striking out eight. Charles (7IP 4H 2R/2ER 1BB/8SO) gave way to Hal Warren who pitched the eighth inning. Warren gave up a lead off double to Kevin Bradley. Warren proceeded to strike out both Stan Littlefield and Julio Krueter. Juan Marbet hit a smash over third base that was flagged down by third baseman Anthony Ribrant with great effort to throw out Marbet to end the inning and deny Washington a scoring chance.

Minnesota trailed 2-0 going into the seventh inning .

Washington scored its first run in the 2nd inning when John Manuel doubled to centerfield and Effie McKay singled in the run.

The second run came in the fifth inning when Charles walked lead off batter Tom Bergman. Pickering moved him to second with a bunt and as happened in game one, Kevin Bartley singled to drive in the run.

Lefthander Dutch Paynter took over to start the ninth but lasted only one out before Jack Saurez came in to pick up his 9th save.

Minnesota came back to win 8-3 scoring all eight runs in their final two at bats. The sent ten batters to the plate in the seventh. Rick Berkert, the lead off hitter struck out to start the inning. Pickering suddenly lost the plate comletely walking Mike Straub, Amos Strueli and pinch hitter George Gonzalez to load the bases.Chuck Trillo doubled driving in Straub and Strueli to tie the game 2-2. Goose Weeden followed with a two run single scoring Gonzalez and Trillo to put Minnesota ahead 4-2.

Fred Barrett replaced Pickering (6.1IP 4H 2R/2ER 1BB/8SO.) and struck out Kieth Smith, but gave up a bases clearing triple to Anthony Ribrant (Izqueirdo and Weeden scored). Beckert the 10th batter to come to the late singled in his second at bat driving in Ribrant to put Minnesota ahead 8-2. Beckert was caught stealing to end the inning.

Hal Warren pitched the eighth for Minnesota. Warren gaveup a lead off double to center field to Kevin Bartley. Warren struck out both Stan Littlefield and Julio Krueter then got help from third baseman Anthony Ribrant who made a great play on a hot smash by Juan Marbet to throw him out to end the inning with no scoring.

In the bottom of the eight Minnesota added its final run off Goody Roberts.

Damon Carey, the unhappy catcehr, pinch hit for Amos Strueli, the exact opposite of the move made in game one and the crowd gave Caey a sarcastic standing ovation to spank him for his public statements. Carey singled. Don Allison drbbled a slow roller back to the pitcher that acted the same as a bunt. Carey moved to second base. Pinch hitter Aaron Mota, also bristling about a sudden loss of playing time due to the play of Anthony Ribrant, singled the runner to third base and Floyd Izqueirdo drove him in with a single.

8-1 Minnesota.

Lefthander Dutch Paynter started the ninth on the mound for Minnesota in an effort to give Jack Saurez and night off. Gene Pagan solved the sidearmers fastball for a solo homerun, his 6th, and the 3rd allowed by Paynter in 25.2 innings pitched. (8-2).

John Manuel reached on an infield single and Effie Maxcy singled him to third base. Tom Bergman hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Manuel. Pinch hitter Bob Sasser batting for Goody Roberts doubled driving in Maxcy.

That was all for Paynter. Jack Saurez came in with the score 8-5 Minnesota, one out and one on. Barley grounded out to shortstop Don Allison, an eight inning defensive repalcement. Stan Littlefield hit a high fly to left field caught by leftfielder Floyd Izquierdo to end the game. It was Saurez' 9th save
